Today we celebrate Pentacost.

In the Old Testament, the Day of Pentecost was known as the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), a major agricultural festival celebrated 50 days (greek: penta) after Passover. It marks the end of the grain harvest, serving as a day of thanksgiving for the firstfruits. Later Jewish tradition also linked this feast to the giving of the Law (Torah) at Mount Sinai.

The wind and fire of Pentacost resounds throughout the Bible ( i.e. Ex 10:13; Ps 18:42; Is 11:15; Mt 14:23–32). Wind also refers to the breath of life; just as the first Adam received physical breath Gen 2:7), so the last Adam, Jesus, breathes spiritual life. Fire symbolizes the holiness and presence of God (Ex 3:2; 13:21–22; 24:17; Is 10:17; Ps 97:3; Mal 3:2; Heb 12:29). The divine fire of the burning bush, the tabernacle, and temple, comes to people on the Day of Pentacost. God now dwells with Jesus' followers as a living temple!

The miraculous speaking in foreign tongues on the Day of Pentacost allowed different language groups to understand the message of Jesus. Listeners were “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37). 3,000 people repented and were baptized (Acts 2:38, 41).

"It’s a temple made out of 'each one of them.' It’s made of people. People will meet with God not in a geographic place or constructed space but in connection with those who choose to trust and follow Jesus. God’s fire shines with power and harms nobody, and it ignites a cosmic revolution, the Church. The story tells us that God now dwells within the community of Jesus followers. This living temple is made of people who operate like Jesus, ending fear and oppression with love and peacefully teaching humanity how to love and bless one another. In this sense, Pentecost marks the beginning of a new world."
