Shedding Light Outdoors

Shedding Light Outdoors We are a group of average Joes who enjoy sharing our hunting experiences and our faith. We invite you to join us! Jim Keeling then joined the group in 2016.

Shedding Light Outdoors was born in June of 2015. Travis Shirer and Travis Williams had been shooting hunting parody videos called TNT Outdoors throughout college. In 2012 they actually got a bow kill on film and the addiction began. In 2014 Travis S got together with Joey Barrett and filmed "Barrett's Last Stand" where Joey harvested a 9 point buck. We decided to join forces and create a site tha

t would promote our hunting and our faith. As we grow and learn we hope that you will join us in that journey. We are not hunting experts nor are we faith experts. We are 4 guys that simply love the Lord and we love the woods. We hope to share that with you as we go into the next hunting season!

I've struggled over the years hunting Northeastern Ohio at my in-laws. Not many hills, benches, and terrain features to utilize like back home. But with EHD wrecking our SE Ohio population, I was looking forward to Thanksgiving and trying again. This video chronicles how I moved in with each hunt and got stick bow close with my recurve.

Travis Shirer uses his recurve bow to successfully take 3 Ohio does with his traditional bow. He was very happy to have a successful season after struggling the prior year. Traditional bowhunting at its best !

What a crazy hunt! Set up on this field and called at 2:10pm. He answered but was a ways off. I have to leave at 2:45 to go get my kids off the bus. I knew it would have to happen quick…hence me not taking time to put on camo pants. He answers but doesn’t come in. I go to leave at 2:45 and start calling as I go walking up a path. I hear him again and he now out in the field I just left. I run back down the path so no can see and I watch him in full strut 200 yards away with a hen and 3 jakes…and they are headed my direction. My wife’s at work. I call my neighbor who’s a turkey hunter and quietly explain the situation. The flock starts running my way and gets to 80 yards. Neighbor agrees to pick the kids up off the bus for me. I hang up and get the gun up. The hen comes right to the gate (mind you, I have permission on both sides) and the jakes start heading over the hill. He gets to 60 yards, lifts his head and I rolled him. And somehow I got it all on video which I can’t wait for you to see. This season hasn’t played out as easy as past seasons. But I’ve kept at it when I can. I’m grateful to the Lord for the time in the woods, big turkeys, and neighbors who are there for you when you need them!

Never know what sights you’ll see when you on a turkey hunt. This hen came out yesterday and after getting guests with the decoy, settle down and preened herself and then laid down 10 yards from us. Hoped the Tom we’d heard earlier would make his way in but he never did. Still incredible to be this close to a unique creature God has made for us to enjoy.

“Its Not About Me.” Or at least that’s what we say as parents. Yet sometime we can make it be that way. The past 3 seasons I’ve gotten my daughter on multiple birds…but each season has came and gone without a punched tag. Why? Because I didnt like being in a blind. I much prefer being out in the open with my back to a tree. But after several close calls where the Tom would catch movement and not commit to the decoys, I finally realized I needed to hunt her hunt and put her in a position to succeed. After all, it’s not about me. Tom was roosted 60 yards from us. Called from the roost for 30 minutes before pitching in below us. Called him back up and he came right past the see through blind, 5 yards away. Ansley waited for him to get to the decoys and let him have it. 20.8 lb Tom with a 9 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. Couldn’t be happier for her. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Phil 2:3-4
