The Firs

The Firs On a mission to make Jesus known for over 100 years! Join us! The original building constructed in 1903 was the honeymoon cottage for Mr. and Mrs. Otis Whipple.

Our camps and retreat centers are set apart to give you an opportunity to and experience the love of God, all while surrounded by the unique beauty. The Firs has been in continual operation since 1921 when the first summer family conference was held. It was at that time the name “The Firs” was first used. In 1929, The Firs was incorporated as a non-profit organization. Personnel class

ifications include the Council, Board of Trustees, and Staff. The Firs is governed by the Board, which is chosen from the Council. In the fall of 1954, The Firs secured an 80-acre tract of land with 2,600 feet of shoreline, along Lake Whatcom, located about six miles from the main Conference Center. This piece of property, known as Firwood, is the site of the youth camping program. In 1967, a 12-acre wooded offshore island was added. The lay of the land lends itself to the uniqueness of Firwood, in that the terrain allows for varied waterfront programs to be carried on simultaneously with land activities. In 1977, the land known as “South Cove,” adjacent to Firwood, was added to The Firs properties. This consists of an additional 20 acres with about 1,000 feet of waterfront. Property at Mt. Baker was made available by lease in 1956 to build The Firs Chalet. Since 1958, ski camps have been held continuously throughout winter and spring months. The facilities are also used for fall retreats. The Chalet, an arched A-framed building, is a four-story structure with a capacity of approximately 100 campers. It is used for Firs-sponsored camps for young people and adults and for guest groups through contractual agreements. The Chalet is located approximately 50 miles from Bellingham and 3/10 of a mile from the Mt. Baker recreational area. In the summer of 1999, an existing facility in Canada, called Latona Beach, was purchased. This saltwater property is just over an hour from downtown Vancouver, B.C., in Howe Sound on Gambier Island. Latona Beach sits on approximately 118 acres with 3,500 feet of waterfront. It was utilized by The Firs as a service to churches and other organizations, by providing a beautiful, remote facility for youth camps and retreats. The Firs owned and operated this facility through the fall of 2006. It was determined at that time to sell the camp and property, bringing the ministry back to its three sites located in the U.S.

Today marks a pivotal day in the history of ! What once felt like a dream is now becoming reality — a significant portion of the road to camp is officially paved!

Because of the incredible generosity of five donors, we were able to fund 1/3 of the road project. We are beyond grateful for the many hands, hearts, and prayers that have helped make this dream come true. What a blessing it is to watch God provide through such an amazing community!

Kauai—and the people we’ve had the privilege of meeting here—have continued to both inspire and deepen our faith.

Over the past two days, serving alongside has been an unforgettable experience. The people who faithfully serve this community through the food bank carry a love for others that is truly contagious.

Today, 294 individuals received fresh food, and it felt like a glimpse of Jesus feeding the 5,000. His glory was on full display as our team and the food bank staff came together to share the love of Christ in a tangible, meaningful, and hope-filled way.

Moments like these remind us that even the simplest acts of service can become powerful reflections of God’s compassion and provision.

We invite you to join us in praying for the food bank team. Their work is constant, the needs are great, and their impact reaches far beyond what most people see. Pray that God would strengthen and encourage them, and that His love and presence would be evident in and through everything they do.

We are so grateful for this incredible group of guys from Christ Church in Bellingham who have given their weekend to lovingly care for Camp Firwood.

They’ll be helping prepare the property for campers to arrive by rebuilding the Big Field fence, clearing the mountain bike trails, and prepping the campsites on The Island.

But first, they were blessed to hear a message from the incredibly gifted Professor of Old Testament Studies, Bruce Waltke.

It is always a blessing to gather at Firwood around the truth of Scripture. Moments like these remind us of the strong foundation this place was built upon and the lasting impact God continues to make through His Word and His people.

Our Radicle + Rooted students are currently serving on a mission trip in Kauai—coming alongside local families who are often unable to make ends meet in a tourist-driven economy. 🌺

We’re incredibly grateful to partner with for Humanity. Their dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to care for and strengthen their community, and it’s an honor for our students to serve alongside them. 💛
