“Count Your Blessings”

This hymn was written in 1897 by Johnson Oatman Jr. with the music composed by Edwin Excell. Oatman was a Methodist minister that penned over 5,000 hymns. Oatman’s father was in the music ministry and possessed a great singing voice. Unfortunately, Oatman didn’t get this trait passed on to him, but he found his true calling in writing the lyrics to the hymns. It was his own way of sharing the Gospel. At the age of 19, Oatman became a licensed minister and served as a local preacher for many years. In addition to preaching and writing hymns, he took over the family insurance business. With all that he did in life, what he is remembered most for, is the wonderful hymns he crafted for the Lord. This hymn became extremely popular in the early 20th century. During the Welsh revival, it was sang almost every service.

This hymn shines a light on the Christian’s mindset. Many times we can get stuck in a comparison mindset always asking why we don’t have what others do. A “woe is me” mindset. This can be very damaging and can always hurt God’s feelings. When taking a look at your life, God gave you breath in your lungs for another day on this earth to make an impact for Him. He blessed you with a church, church family, and provisions in life. When we really start looking at all the wonderful blessings God has poured out on us without us ever deserving them, we should adapt a spirit of extreme thankfulness. Especially when looking at Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice of His life for us so that we may be able to reach Heaven.

“Many, O LORD my God, Are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward: They cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.”
Psalm 40:5 KJV

“Isn’t The Love Of Jesus Something Wonderful”

This hymn was written by John W. Peterson in 1961. Peterson wrote both the words and the tune to this hymn.

After Peterson graduated high school, he traveled and sang with two of his brothers. In 1940, the trio of brothers were called the Norse Gospel Trio, and they faced a terrifying car wreck. A tanker truck crossed the lanes and hit their car head-on. Luckily only the car was destroyed in this accident and all the brother walked away with only minor injuries. That specific moment and others like it are what drove the inspiration behind Peterson’s many hymns. He wrote over a thousand songs in his lifetime.

Peterson went on to attend the Moody Bible Institute and decided to pursue writing gospel songs for his career. After, he finished this first school, he then went on to attend the American Conservatory of Music, where he graduated in 1953.

This hymn is known for its joyful and upbeat rhythm, making it a favorite to sing in churches and revivals. The aim of Peterson’s songs were to provide encouragement to believers to really grasp the concept of the boundless love of God and the incredible joy we should be experiencing in our salvation.

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39 KJV
