“Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed.”
Proverbs 28:27
To a child, a pair of gym shoes that fit and are fit to wear matter more than you may think. Comfort matters, but the relief we bring goes far beyond that.
Today, we provided shoes/socks for a little boy participating in a summer camp for children who are homeless. This is a camp full of physical activities like running, jumping and climbing. Movement plays a huge role in physical growth and development. Physical games also contribute to social/emotional development. This is why kids are hard-wired to want to PLAY.
The little boy we helped today, has been unable to take part in any of the activities that require motion because of the condition of his shoes and feet. He never complained to anyone, he just did not join in. He probably has not joined in any type of play requiring much movement for a long time. It is hard to move with your toes curled under and the soles disconnected from your shoes.
For a child caught in the trauma and despair of homelessness, lack of the basics becomes normal. Feeling less- than becomes normal. Feeling like you are not worth helping becomes normal. Feeling unseen becomes normal. Feeling like help will never come becomes normal. This is why children suffer in silence.
These feelings over time, literally change young brains in unhealthy ways, leading to unhealthy thoughts and actions that can continue for a lifetime if the cycle goes unbroken.
Fortunately, a counselor recognized his shoe problem, and reached out to us for help. Within an hour of calling us, he was happily running and playing in brand new, awesome shoes and socks.
The relief we bring through a pair of shoes and socks has a huge ripple effect beyond just comfort.
Thank you for caring.
