June 11 - St. Barnabas, Apostle -

Born Joseph, he was renamed after he converted to Christianity. Following his conversion he gave all his money and property to the Church, and later became a powerful missionary and preacher, traveling with St. Paul and advocating that pagans could be baptized as Christians without being circumcised. “The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch…for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith” (Acts 11:22-24 ESV). His name literally means “son of encouragement” and he lived up to it. His shield features an open Bible, presenting "the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ", surrounded by three stones, recalling the manner of his martyrdom.

Howard Thurman once wrote:

"The bitter truth is that the Church has permitted the various hate-inspired groups in our common life to establish squatter's rights in the minds of believers because there has been no adequate teaching of the meaning of the faith in terms of human dignity and human worth."

As followers of Christ, we are called to see the image of God in every person. Faith is not only what we believe, but how we treat our neighbors, especially those who are marginalized, excluded, or harmed.

May we continue the work of building communities rooted in dignity, compassion, justice, and love.

June 6 - William Alfred Passavant - Renewer of Society

Born in Zelienople, Butler County, Pennsylvania, 9 October, 1821. He graduated from Jefferson college, Pennsylvania, in 1840, and at the Lutheran theological seminary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1842. In the latter year he was ordained to the ministry, and he held pastorates in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1842-'4, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1844-'55. He was instrumental in the establishment of hospitals at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chicago and Jacksonville, Illinois, and orphanages at Rochester, Pennsylvania, Zelienople, Pennsylvania, and Mr. Vernon, New York. He was the first to introduce the order of deaconesses in any hospital in this country in 1849, but, owing to a "lack of support, his project failed. He was the leader of the movement that resulted in the establishment of Thiel college, Greenville, Pennsylvania, in 1870. Dr. Passavant published a large number of sermons, addresses, and reports. He was the founder of the "Missionary" in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1848, and its editor until it was merged, in 1861, into the "Lutheran and Missionary" in Philadelphia, and then for a number of years he was one of the editors of the combined periodical. In 1880 he founded the "Workman," a bi-weekly, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, of which he was editor until 1887.
