Composer of our days and director of our lives, your wonder is engraved in the foundations of all creation. Tune our hearts to praise, and silence our crowded minds so we might sing the majesty of your love. —Bread for the Day

Sometimes we have to preach to our hearts and to our flesh and remind them of what is true: that Christ is always worthy to be worshipped and praised, no matter what our current circumstances look like or feel like.

Look at King David, who throughout the Palms commanded his heart to worship the Lord. He didn’t always feel like it, but truth trumps feelings, and the source of all truth , the Lord God, is always worthy to be worshipped. He is always worthy to be praised.

Worship is not about our feelings, it is about who God is. And he is very great, very good and worthy of all of our praise and worship in every season.

Before it was a holiday weekend, Memorial Day was a sacred act of remembrance.

In the years after the Civil War, people gathered in cemeteries to decorate the graves of soldiers with flowers and prayers. The observance became known as “Decoration Day,” eventually growing into what we now call Memorial Day.

Today we remember not only history, but people:
Beloved children of God whose lives were cut short by war.

We pray for peace in our world and comfort for all who grieve.

“What Memorial Day Means to Me…”
Memorial Day means more to me now that I am older.

Now that I understand
that every fallen soldier
was once somebody’s baby.

Some mother once rocked them to sleep.
Some father taught them how to ride a bike.
Someone watched them run through sprinklers,
graduate high school,
fall in love,
dream about the future.

And then one day,
their family had to learn
how to keep living
without them.

That is what Memorial Day means to me.

It means understanding
that freedom is not normal.
It was protected.
Defended.
Paid for.

It means realizing
that somewhere in America,
there are families who never fully healed.

Families who still set flowers beside gravestones.
Who still cry during the national anthem.
Who still wonder who their son or daughter would have become.

A grandfather.
A mother.
An old man rocking on a porch someday.

Memorial Day means remembering
that some people gave up their entire future
so mine could exist.
