Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden

Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden Serving God and the Dear Neighbor without distinction We are a Catholic congregation of vowed women who are dedicated to loving and serving God and neighbor.

Rooted in prayer, community living and the Gospel, we commit ourselves to the mission of unity and reconciliation, nonviolence and peacemaking through our presence, our prayers and our service. We live and work to be in union with God, with Earth, with one another, with the Church and with all whom we meet.

It's Labor Day.
May we be reminded today:

"The use of AI is never a purely technical matter: when it enters processes that affect people's lives, it touches on rights, opportunities, status and freedom. Important and sensitive decisions --concerning employment, credit, access to public services or even a person's reputation -- risk being fully delegated to automated systems that do not know 'compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and above all, the hope that people are able to change,' and can therefore give rise to a new form of exclusion.”
Magnifica Humanitas
Pope Leo XIV

On this Labor Day, as we pray today for just and living wages, we also ask for wisdom in the development and use of artificial intelligence.

May the application of AI by corporate titans be tempered with the need for a white-collar workforce and a respect for the dignity and gifts of every human person.

Please remember in prayer Sister Melissa Joyce, 84, who died on September 4.

Sister Melissa’s vocation was formed during high school when she taught Sunday school alongside the Sisters. Those early experiences of nurturing faith and supporting young people became the foundation for 23 years as a teacher in schools that included St. Charles in Donora (1964-67) and Assumption (1967-79), St. Bernard (1979-81), and St. Raphael (1981-83) in Pittsburgh.

Called to serve those in need, Sister Melissa began volunteering at Mercy Hospital in 1989, as she shifted her ministry of presence from the classroom to health care. She started working at Mercy Health Center shortly after and once wrote with excitement that her heart “missed and skipped many beats” on the day she was hired.

She found purpose in offering a listening ear, accompanying those who were lonely, and extending kindness through simple acts, such as arranging wheelchair transport, calling a cab, or sharing coloring pages with children.

At Mercy, she served in admission, registration, billing, and patient information roles for more than 20 years. Sister Melissa gently responded to the needs of those around her and was grateful for every opportunity to be “learning, reflecting and doing.”

Our Sisters have certainly been exercising their creativity this week, thanks to Abby Bartels, who plans such unique and engaging activities.

This is one of the joys of living in community: laughter, learning, and love.

Whether flower arranging, tie-dying, or even learning a new recipe (Pistachio Oat Bars, which maaaaybe we’ll add chocolate chips to next time - lol), courtesy of our Cura Staff, there is ALWAYS something happening here.

Take a look! Recognize any faces???

Today, we begin the Season of Creation with a prayer. Every act of care for creation can become part of a global stream of hope.

Each year from September 1 to October 4, we observe this time of reflection, prayer, and action to care for our common home. This special season invites us to recognize our deep connection to all of creation and calls us to work in unity to protect it.

Our well-being is interwoven with the well-being of the Earth.

"Environmental justice – implicitly proclaimed by the prophets – can no longer be regarded as an abstract concept or a distant goal. It is an urgent need that involves much more than simply protecting the environment. For it is a matter of justice – social, economic and human. For believers it is also a duty born of faith, since the universe reflects the face of Jesus Christ, in whom all things were created and redeemed."
Pope Leo
(Taken from his Message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation 2025)

Will you join us in prayer during this time for the well-being of the Earth?

Creator God, we remember
those who have lost their lives
in flooding in Nepal and the Grand Canyon,
those who are grieving,
and neighbors around the world
whose homes, communities, and livelihoods
have been impacted by natural disaster.

May this Season of Creation,
which begins tomorrow,
awaken us to the deep
connection between Earth
and all who call it home.

👩‍🎨 Raise your hand if you're an art enthusiast! 🎨

Thanks to the generous contribution of our 2026 Brushstroke Sponsor, Universal Information Systems, Inc., we'll have an artist creating a painting LIVE during this year's Faith. Field. Feast. event.

While Angie Candell, The Storybook Painter, The Storybook Painter, captures our meaningful evening through a one-of-a-kind painting, guests will have the opportunity to bid on Angie’s piece during an auction that will begin that evening and continue for a week following the event.

The finished piece of our tree-lined pathway will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, and all funds will support our Ecology ministry and ongoing work to address food insecurity in our region.

Learn more about our gracious Faith. Field. Feast. Presenting Sponsor, Steve and Betty Uzupis, from someone who knows them best - Steve's sister, Sister Jean!

Steve and Betty have a myriad of interests.

🥦🥕They plant a garden each summer that produces a large variety of colorful vegetables.🍅🥬

Weeding isn’t their favorite activity, but their effort really pays off.
The harvest allows for the preparation of wonderful homemade meals.
Simple, fresh, & delicious.

✈️They also enjoy traveling, exploring new locations and meeting new people.🧳

Betty especially enjoys finding hidden, out-of-the-way attractions to explore and discovering the best of local cuisines. For example, a trip to Scotland led to the challenge of seeing who serves the best sticky toffee pudding.
(That's a challenge we can get behind!)

They are always up to trying something new.

And this year they are supporting Faith. Field. Feast. in such a generous way.

Thank you, Steve & Betty.
We appreciate you!
