THE CROWD CHOSE BARABBAS — BUT THE BIBLE WARNS US NOT TO MAKE THE SAME CHOICE

The Bible tells us a heartbreaking story. When Pilate gave the crowd a choice between Jesus and Barabbas, the people shouted for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be crucified. Barabbas was a prisoner, while Jesus was innocent. Yet the crowd rejected the One who came to save them. (Matthew 27:15–26; Mark 15:6–15; Luke 23:18–25; John 18:39–40).

This was not simply a decision made thousands of years ago. It reveals something about the human heart.

Sometimes people choose what is popular instead of what is true. They choose comfort instead of conviction. They choose worldly approval instead of obedience to God. They may know what Scripture says, yet still reject it because the truth demands repentance, surrender, and change.

Jesus was rejected by the crowd, but He did not stop loving humanity.

He willingly endured the cross because His mission was not to please the crowd—it was to fulfill the Father’s will and give His life for sinners.

Today, the question is not whether you would have shouted with the crowd. The question is: Whom are you choosing today?

Are you choosing Jesus when following Him costs you friends, popularity, money, comfort, or reputation?

Are you standing with biblical truth even when the world mocks it?

Do not follow the crowd simply because everyone else is going in the same direction. A majority can be wrong. Popularity does not make something righteous.

The crowd chose Barabbas. But you still have a choice.

Choose Christ. Choose truth. Choose repentance. Choose obedience.

Do not trade the eternal for the temporary. Do not exchange Jesus for the approval of the world.

“What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ?” (Matthew 27:22)

Your answer matters.

This Sunday brings us to our third sermon in our series from the Book of Romans. This Sunday's message is titled "Chasing Righteousness" and the Scripture lesson is Romans 6:1-11. We would love to have you join us at any of the three churches on the Augusta Charge: Hott's Chapel at 9AM, Mt. Zion at 10AM, or Augusta at 11AM. This Sunday's service will include Holy Communion. Romans 6:1-11 NASB
1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2. Far from it! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin, 7. for the one who has died is freed from sin.
8. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9. knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11. So you too, consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ.
