"THE SIXTH TRUMPET"
REVELATION 9:13-21
12 One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.
13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.
20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

INTRO: ~ Nearly all of the book of The Revelation has been easy to understand, outline, and interpret. However, whenever we come to Revelation 9:13-21, this passage is extremely difficult to interpret.
I. WHO ARE THE FOUR ANGELS?
A.) The Release Of The Four Angels
II Peter 2:4-7 "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of S***m and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly."
Jude 6 "And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day."
MacArthur New Testament Commentary: "Rising from sources near Mount Ararat in Turkey, the Euphrates flows more than seventeen-hundred miles before emptying into the Persian Gulf. It is the longest and most important river in the Middle East, and figures prominently in the Old Testament. It was one of the four rivers into which the river that flowed out of the Garden of Eden divided (Gen.2:14). It was near the Euphrates sin began, the first lie was told, the first murder was committed, and the tower of Babel (the origin of an entire complex of false religions that spread across the world) was built."
"It is the river over which the enemies of God will cross to engage in the battle of Armageddon (16:12:16)."
B.) The Reason For Their Release
 The judgment of the fourth seal killed one quarter of the earth's population (6:8); this additional third brings the death toll from these two judgments alone to half of the earth's population.
Revelation 6:8 "So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth."
II. WHO IS THE 200 MILLION MEMBER ARMY
A.) Some Say This Is A Natural/ Human Army.
Dr. David Jeremiah, in "Escape The Coming Night," advocates a human army.
Dr. Ed Hindson From The 21st Century Commentary: "While some prefer to view this invading horde as demons, I believe they are an actual army. The battles that follow involve killing men, and the attackers are described as men (vv. 16-18). The weapons with "breastplates the color of fire" could well be modern weapons. These "breastplates the color of fire" and the "fire and smoke and brimstone" that shot out of both ends of these vehicles certainly sound like tanks, airplanes, or some modern weaponry."
“If John really saw the future, including the great end-times wars, he would have witnessed things he could hardly understand, let alone describe. Tanks, guns, flame-throwers, and laser beams. All fit these possible designations. While the horde of demons is unleashed to torture and afflict men, the horde of soldiers is unleashed to attack them as well.”
"Beyond lay the Parthian kingdoms (equivalent today to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, parts of India, and southern Russia). It is certainly possible that China or Japan could be involved in an invasion of Israel in the End Times. But the text itself does not require that interpretation. It is much more likely that this invasion involves an alliance of the non-Arab Muslim nations led by Iran and the Muslim republics from the former Soviet Union. Sixty million Muslims live in these republics alone."
Dr. John Phillips - Exploring Revelation: "Here they come, 200 million men, marching to their doom to forward Satan's plans for the
Beast."
"Is this an army of men or of demons? Probably the description is that of an army of men driven by demons. Certainly the language has to be symbolic. Just as the shapes of the "locusts" released under the previous trumpet depicted the characteristics of the demons they symbolized, so the shapes of the "horses" here indicate the warlike, ferocious nature of the demons they represent. So then, the four angels from the Euphrates conjure up spirit legions who madden men and drive them forth to battle. The mention of the fire, smoke, and brimstone might also be a symbolic reference to modern warfare with its emphasis on fire and flame."
B.) Some Say This Is A Supernatural / Demonic Army.
Dr. John MacArthur’s New Testament Commentary: "Some have suggested that this is the human army referred to in 16:12 and led by "The kings from the east," noting that the Red Chinese army reportedly numbered 200 million during the 1970s. But no reference is made to the size of the army led by the kings of the East. Further, that army arrives on the scene during the sixth bowl judgment, which takes place during the seventh trumpet, not the sixth. Though there may be at that time an existing standing army of two hundred million, the impossibility of marshaling, supplying, and transporting such a vast human force all over the globe also argues against this army being a human army. The figurative language used to describe this army's horses suggests that this is a supernatural rather than human force, as does the fact that it is commanded by the four newly released demons."
Dr. Warren Wiersbe - The Bible Exposition Commentary: "Are we to identify this as a literal army of men, moving in conquest across the globe? Probably not. For one thing, the emphasis in this paragraph is not on the riders, but on the horses. The description cannot fit war-horses as we know them or, for that matter, modern warfare equipment, such as tanks. To assert that this is a literal army, and to point to some nation (such as China) that claims to have 200 million soldiers, is to miss the message John is seeking to convey."
"I take it that this is another demonic army, headed by four fallen angels; and that all of them are today bound by the Lord, unable to act until God gives them permission."
The Preacher's Outline & Sermon Bible: “The first woe judgment was seen in the former passage, the blast of a demonic-like plague of locusts. The demonic locusts could only torture men, not kill them. But now the sixth trumpet blasts forth its judgment, and another horde of demons come forth. This time, however, there is a difference. These are military demons, and they shall take their toll upon human life. An astronomical number of the ungodly and evil of the world will die under the judgment of God’s righteous hand in this woe judgment. This is the judgment of the demonic military horsemen.”

"ABUSSOS"
REVELATION 9:1-12
Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.
7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. 8 They had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. 9 And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.

INTRO: ~ John Philips - Exploring Revelation: "Picture what the world would be like if we were to open the doors of all the penitentiaries of earth and set free the world's most vicious and violent criminals, giving them full rein to practice their infamies upon mankind. Something worse than that lies in store for the world. Satan, cast out of heaven, is now permitted to summon to his aid the most diabolical fiends in the abyss to act as his agents in bringing mankind to the footstool of the Beast."
Robertson Word Pictures In The Greek Language By A.T. Robertson: “Of the pit of the abyss (tou phreatos tēs abussou). Abussosis an old adjective (alpha privative and buthos, depth, without depth), but hē abussos (supply chōraplace), the bottomless place. It occurs in Rom 10:7 for the common receptacle of the dead for Hades (Sheol), but in Luk 8:31 a lower depth is sounded (Swete), for the abode of demons, and in this sense it occurs in Rev 9:1, Rev 9:2, Rev 9:11; Rev 11:7; Rev 17:8; Rev 20:1, Rev 20:3.”
I. A STAR FALLEN FROM HEAVEN
A.) Who Is This Star?
Dr. David Jeremiah Study Bible Notes: "The star is a metaphor for a supernatural being (him, he), not a celestial body. This unnamed being, who falls to earth during the judgment of the fifth trumpet, is undoubtedly Satan (12:7-9; Isa. 14:12, 15; Luke 10:18)."
The MacArthur Study Bible Notes: "A star fallen from heaven. Unlike the other stars that will have fallen (6:13; 8:8), this one will be an angelic being (cf. v.2) - probably Satan himself."
1.) The Old Testament
Isaiah 14:12-17 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit. Those who see you will gaze at you, and consider you, saying: 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world as a wilderness and destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of the his prisoners?"
Ezekiel 28:16 "By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones."
2.) The New Testament
Luke 10:18 "And He said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven."
Revelation 12:9 "So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
Warren Wiersbe - The Bible Knowledge Commentary: "This fallen star is a person, the king over the beings in the pit (Rev. 9:11). He does not have complete authority, for the key to the pit had to be given to him before he could loose his army. This "star" is probably Satan and the army, his demons (Eph. 6:10). One of the names for Satan is Lucifer, which means "brightness"; he also is compared to the "morning star" (Isa. 14:12-14). Jesus said to His disciples, "I behold Stan as lightning fall from heaven" (Luke 10:18)."
B.) What Is He Doing?
Revelation 1:18 "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.
Luke 8:31 "And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss."
"BOTTOMLESS" Thayer's Greek Dictionary: G12 - ἄβυσσος - abussos - Thayer Definition: 1) bottomless 2) unbounded 3) the abyss 3a) the pit 3b) the immeasurable depth 3c) of Orcus, a very deep gulf or chasm in the lowest parts of the earth used as the common receptacle of the dead and especially as the abode of demons
"PIT" Thayer's Greek Dictionary: G5421 - φρέαρ - phrear - Thayer Definition: 1) a well 2) the pit of the abyss (because the nether world is thought to increase in size the further it extends from the surface of the earth and so resemble a cistern, the or***ce of which is narrow)

MacArthur New Testament Commentary: "With his theater of operations now restricted to the earth, and his time running out (cf. 12:12), Satan will seek to marshal all of his demonic hosts - those already on earth, those cast to earth with him, and those incarcerated in the bottomless pit (literally ‘the pit of the abyss’). Abussos (bottomless) appears seven times in Revelation, always in reference to the abode of incarcerated demons (cf. 9:2; 11: 11:7; 17:8). Satan himself will be held prisoner there during the Millennium, chained and locked up with the other demonic prisoners (20:1, 3). Scripture teaches that God has sovereignly chosen to incarcerate certain demons in that pit of punishment. Second Peter 2:4 says that "God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment." The phrase "cast them into hell" is a participle derived from the Greek noun Tartarus."
"The demons incarcerated in the abyss are undoubtedly the most wicked, vile, and perverted of all the fallen angels. Jude describes some of them as "angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode," noting that God "has kept [them] in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, just as S***m and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 6-7)."
“After Satan received the key to the abyss from its keeper, the Lord Jesus Christ (1:18), he opened the bottomless pit and released its inmates.”
II. OUT OF THE SMOKE, LOCUSTS CAME UPON THE EARTH
21st Century Commentary: "The plagues of locusts described in the Apocalypse represent a demonic invasion of planet earth. The creatures are depicted as having been imprisoned in the abyss. They are released by divine permission and torment unbelievers - those who do not have the "seal of God" (9:4)."
MacArthur New Testament Commentary: "But these were not ordinary locusts, but demons, who, like locusts, bring swarming destruction. Describing them in the form of locusts symbolizes their uncountable numbers and massive destructive capabilities."
A.) These Locust Have A King
Proverbs 30:27 "The locusts have no king, Yet they all advance in ranks."
Revelation 9:11 "And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon."
