If you say, ‘How we will pursue him, since the root of the trouble is found in him!’ - Job 19:28 (NET)

It is at the root that disease begins, in almost every plant. If ever you see even a plant in a flower-pot unhealthy, depend upon it there is something wrong at the root. It is overwatered or underwatered, or from some other cause the root has become diseased—and the root growth is suspended or unhealthy. So it is in religion—if there is anything wrong with a man, it is almost sure to be something wrong at the root. “The root of the matter,” Job said, “is found in me.” Job could appeal unto God that the root of his religion was right.

If “the root” had been wrong, “the matter” would not have been right; but as long as the root was sound, like “the teberinth tree” of which the prophet speaks, though “it cast its leaves, the substance would still be in it,” to put forth in due time boughs like a plant (Isa. 6:13). If a man’s religion has no root, or if the root be injured by disease, it will be sure to discover itself in his profession. He cannot have a prosperous soul—prosperous inwardly and prosperous outwardly—unless the root be deep in the soil, and unless it be full of active fibers, drawing up secret nourishment from that river the streams whereof make glad the city of God. Then he shall be “like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they go right on producing delicious fruit.” (Jer. 17:8).

The Spurgeon Birthday Book

If you grow until you are less than nothing, you are full grown; but few have reached that stage. If you grow until Christ is everything to you, you are in your prime; but, alas, how far short of this do most men fall! The Lord bring you to that highest of all growths—to be daily coming to Christ; always empty in yourself, but full in him; always weak in yourself, but strong in him; always nothing in self, but Christ your perpetual all in all.

No Other Name But Jesus!

Acts 4:10-12 (NET 2nd Ed.)
10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.”

Matthew 12:31 (KJV)
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

You would think that if the devil is going to make us turn our backs on GOD to bow down and worship him, at least the temptation he uses should be an unpardonable sin. Right?

Matthew 12:31 (KJV)
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

You would think that if the devil is going to make us turn our backs on GOD to bow down and worship him, at least the temptation he uses should be an unpardonable sin. Not a sin on the same level as the sin Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died and rose again to save us from. Right?

GOD didn't save and change us through the law. Instead, HE saved and changed us by loving us so much that HE sent HIS Son to die for us. We cannot share this saving and transforming power using methods that GOD did not use to save and change us.

Christians should read and study God’s Word every day. If we don't know what to study, we can do a deeper study on the Sunday sermon.

1 Peter 3:9-17 (NET 2nd Ed.)
9 Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but instead bless others because you were called to inherit a blessing. 10 For
the one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceit.
11 And he must turn away from evil and do good;
he must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the Lord’s face is against those who do evil.
13 For who is going to harm you if you are devoted to what is good? 14 But in fact, if you happen to suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. But do not be terrified of them or be shaken. 15 But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess. 16 Yet do it with courtesy and respect, keeping a good conscience, so that those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they accuse you. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil.

Job 27:13-23 (NET 2nd Ed.)
13 This is the portion of the wicked man allotted by God, the inheritance that evildoers receive from the Almighty. 14 If his children increase—it is for the sword! His offspring never have enough to eat. 15 Those who survive him are buried by the plague,
and their widows do not mourn for them. 16 If he piles up silver like dust
and stores up clothing like mounds of clay, 17 what he stores up a righteous man will wear, and an innocent man will inherit his silver. 18 The house he builds is as fragile as a moth’s cocoon, like a hut that a watchman has made. 19 He goes to bed wealthy, but will do so no more. When he opens his eyes, it is all gone. 20 Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; at night a whirlwind carries him off. 21 The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. 22 It hurls itself against him without pity as he flees headlong from its power. 23 It claps its hands at him in derision and hisses him away from his place.

“When a man becomes nothing in his own estimation, then Jesus Christ becomes everything to him, and not until then. Self is an effectual darkener of the windows of the soul. How can men see the gospel while they see so much of themselves?”

Charles Spurgeon

Many can bring the Scriptures to the mind, but the Lord alone can prepare the mind to receive the Scriptures. Our Lord Jesus differs from all other teachers; they reach the ear, but he instructs the heart; they deal with the outward letter, but he imparts an inward taste for the truth, by which we perceive its savor and spirit. The most unlearned of men become ripe scholars in the school of grace when the Lord Jesus by his Holy Spirit unfolds the mysteries of the kingdom to them, and grants the divine anointing by which they are enabled to behold the invisible. Happy are we if we have had our understandings cleared and strengthened by the Master!
