Rev. James L. Swanger, affectionately known throughout gospel music and ministry circles as “Little Red,” has spent a lifetime faithfully proclaiming the Gospel through both broadcasting and pastoral ministry. Born on July 18, 1961, Swanger’s remarkable public ministry began at an age when most children are simply learning their place in the world. In March of 1968, he entered radio broadcasting, demonstrating an uncommon passion and gift for sharing the Message of Christ. At just nine years old, he had already been entrusted with his own weekly radio program, Gospel Youth Time, marking the beginning of what would become a lifelong commitment to ministry through the airwaves and beyond.

Throughout the years, Rev. Swanger became a familiar and respected voice in gospel broadcasting, serving at numerous radio stations including WTJH, WYZE, WPBS, WXLL, WCLS, and WSSA. His dedication, professionalism, and leadership abilities earned him positions of management at three separate radio stations—an achievement few in gospel broadcasting can claim. In August of 1970, his exceptional contributions to the field were nationally recognized when he received the prestigious Golden Mic Award from the Singing News, affirming the impact of his work at an early age.

In June of 1980, James married Sylvia Lane, beginning a partnership rooted in faith, family, and ministry. Together, they have built a strong Christian legacy, raising three children and enjoying the blessings of seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

While radio ministry remained a vital part of his calling, God expanded Rev. Swanger’s mission in February of 1993 when he answered the call to preach. Transitioning into pastoral ministry, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to shepherding congregations and spreading the Gospel through local church ministry. Demonstrating a burden for evangelism and discipleship, Rev. Swanger successfully planted three churches, leaving a lasting spiritual imprint on countless lives and communities.

His years of faithful service culminated in August of 2018 when he was ordained as a Bishop in the Church of God, a fitting recognition of his steadfast leadership, doctrinal faithfulness, and unwavering dedication to the Kingdom of God.

Today, Bishop James L. Swanger serves as Lead Pastor of Freedom River Church of God in Maryville, Tennessee, where he continues to minister with wisdom, compassion, and an unmistakable passion for the Gospel. His story is one of early calling, enduring faithfulness, and a lifelong devotion to serving both God and people.

For his many decades of faithful ministry, his pioneering contributions to gospel radio broadcasting, and his unwavering commitment to sharing the message of Jesus Christ, the Georgia Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame is honored to welcome Rev. James L. Swanger, affectionately known as “Little Red,” into the GSGMHOF family. His legacy of service, leadership, and Gospel influence will forever hold a cherished place in the rich heritage of Southern Gospel Music and ministry.

He was one of the final members of ‘Naomi & The Segos’ and spent much time with Sister Naomi during her final days. Let’s thank him for his willingness to traveling, singing and caring for her. He is a great guy, and we wanted to honor him for his dedication.

The Singing Skylites of Shannon, Georgia, became one of the most beloved and respected regional Southern Gospel groups of their era, building a faithful following through heartfelt ministry, musical excellence, and unwavering dedication to sharing the Gospel through song. Though they may have been considered a “regional” group, their influence and reputation extended far beyond the borders of Northwest Georgia, earning the admiration of audiences and fellow artists alike throughout the Southeast.

The Singing Skylites consisted of vocalists Bobby and Annette Cross alongside Sam and Jeanie Mize, whose harmonious blend gave the group a distinctive and memorable sound. Supporting the quartet musically were Edward Oswald on bass guitar, Walter Holden on steel guitar, Dale Willingham on drums, and Lamar Newton at the piano. Together, they formed a polished and talented ensemble whose music resonated deeply with listeners wherever they traveled.

The group released several well-loved recordings over the years, including Wonderful World of Gospel Music and Higher Ground, both of which were recorded at the prestigious LeFevre Sound Studios in Atlanta, Georgia — a studio long associated with excellence in Southern Gospel music. Later recordings were released on respected labels including Bibletone, Van Hool, and Riviera, further expanding the reach of their ministry and music.

Deeply rooted in their faith and church family, The Singing Skylites were active members of Shannon Church of God, where Sam Mize’s father faithfully served as pastor. Their ministry regularly carried them into churches of every size and denomination, as well as civic auditoriums and school venues across the Southeast. Whether before a congregation of a few dozen or a packed auditorium, the group ministered with the same sincerity and passion, leaving a lasting impression wherever they sang.

Although each member faithfully worked full-time secular jobs during the week, weekends were devoted to ministry and music. In every sense of the phrase, The Singing Skylites embodied the spirit of true “Weekend Warriors.” Their tireless commitment to Gospel music, coupled with their humility and authenticity, earned them a loyal and adoring fan base that kept their calendars full for years. Along the way, they also gained the friendship, admiration, and respect of many nationally recognized Southern Gospel artists who appreciated both their talent and their genuine Christian testimony.

In recognition of their faithful service, musical excellence, and lasting contribution to Southern Gospel Music, it is with great honor that The Singing Skylites are inducted into the Georgia Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame — a fitting tribute to a group whose music and ministry touched countless lives and whose legacy continues to shine brightly in the hearts of Southern Gospel music lovers.

Coming from a long line of some of the finest singers and musicians in our state, today’s inductee is no stranger to the Gospel Music World. She is deeply rooted in church music, but in the last 20 years or so, Robin Barrett Rogers’ amazing and powerful voice was heard as part of Kyla Rowland & Deliverance. After the passing of Sister Kyla, Robin joined forces with several ladies who were also very close to Kyla. They are called ‘Stll Blessed’.

Please make welcome the newest member to the Georgia Southern Gospel Music Hall Of Fame, Robin Rogers!!!
