Welcoming to everyone, Atascadero UMC is a vibrant community church in the town of Atascadero on California's Central Coast.

We are a family of diverse individuals committed to love and acceptance and called by God to be open to many points of view. We seek to be an extended family for all people, regardless of age, race, ethnic origin, s*x, gender identity, s*xual orientation, economic situation, marital status, physical or mental ability. We offer support, fellowship, and worship, equipping those who hunger for wholeness to live and love courageously as disciples of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We believe our diversity is a blessing which strengthens persons to serve, and commit ourselves to Christian service in our community and in the life of the larger church.

Scriptures: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8, Matthew 22:34-46

Dear Friends,
There were a number of folks in the Fellowship Hall this morning, setting up for tomorrow's Holiday Bazaar. The room was filled with so many beautiful works and products. More importantly, the room was filled with a lovely spirit as everyone worked together. Thanks to Gena and her leadership team and other volunteers for planning and working on the Holiday Bazaar for many months, for everyone who showed up to set up for tomorrow, and for all of you who have assembled, baked, cooked, crafted, crocheted, knitted, made ceramics and pottery, quilted, sewed, and shared over the past year in order to make the Holiday Bazaar a success!

As always, I look forward to worshipping together on Sunday morning at 10:00 — and before that, I hope I see you at the Bazaar tomorrow!

Scriptures: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, Matthew 22:15-22

Dear Friends,
This Sunday is Laity Sunday, a special day when United Methodist churches take a moment to celebrate the incredible ministry of our laypeople. Rooted in the belief that we are all called to ministry, this day reminds us that church isn't just about what happens up at the pulpit — it's about all of us working together. Here at AUMC, our laity is the heartbeat of everything we do. Whether you are greeting visitors at the door, teaching our children, serving in local outreach programs, keeping our buildings and grounds clean and attractive, or leading the church through administration and vision — and more! -- you are putting faith into action. Our church shines because each of you brings your unique gifts, skills, and heart to our community.

Scripture: Philippians 4:1-9, Matthew 22:1-14

Dear Friends,

Some invitations are easy to overlook; others have the power to change everything. This Sunday's Gospel passage, Matthew 22:1-14, seems fun at first glance: it's a wedding feast! But as we read, we find that it is more than a simple story about a party (with Jesus, you knew it was going to be, didn't you?). You might be familiar with this passage, or it might be new to you, but notice what surprises, unsettles, and encourages you. What do we learn from this reading about the life God is calling us to share?

Worship for Sunday, September 27, 2026
Scriptures: Matthew 21:23-32, Philippians 2:1-13

Dear Friends,
In this week's Gospel lesson, Matthew 21:23–32, Jesus tells of two sons: one refuses his father’s request but later changes his mind and goes, while the other says all the right words but never follows through. The story invites us to ask ourselves: Is my life responding to God, or am I relying on good thoughts and intentions? Jesus reminds us that faith is more than feeling — it is making a life of turning toward God and taking the next faithful step again and again.
The good news is that our first answer does not have to be our final answer. God’s grace meets us when we reconsider, repent, return, and obey. This week, take a few quiet minutes to ask, “Lord, where are you inviting me to say yes with my actions?” It might be through forgiveness, service, generosity, prayer, honesty, or reconciliation. Choose one concrete response, and let your yes become a life.

Scriptures: Matthew 20:1-16, Philippians 1:21-30

Dear Friends,
This Sunday's Gospel lesson (Matthew 20:1-16) focuses on God's generosity. When we grow in our ability to welcome God's generosity to the world without resentment or making comparisons, we are helping to make God's presence on earth real among ourselves and for others. What is one way you have experienced God's generosity in your life? How has that helped you grow in your generosity to others? Remember, generosity comes in more than material forms.

This Sunday is also Connect Sunday! I welcome the opportunity to sit for a few minutes longer, share a meal, and catch up a bit. You're invited to bring something to share — a side, or a dessert — but, as always, the most important thing is your presence!

Worship for Sunday, September 13, 2026
Scriptures: Matthew 18:21-35, Romans 14:1-12

Dear Friends,
The focus of this week's Gospel passage (Matthew 18:21-35) is forgiveness. We read this passage knowing how difficult it can be to forgive someone who has hurt us. Sometimes we look for valid reasons that we shouldn't have to extend forgiveness — the offender has not apologized or acknowledged what they did, or has not changed their ways.

To forgive can be an expression of the love that we've learned from God, but Jesus is speaking to us about forgiveness in the context of our wholeness and that of the community. Forgiveness is for the offender, yes, but it is also for ourselves. The one we have been hurt by might never know of our forgiveness, but it makes a difference for us.

Is there someone in your life — among your family, friends, co-workers, or in your congregation — that you can forgive? Can you release what might be due to you in order to regain your own peace and wellbeing? I invite you to consider who that is and to ask for God's help in seeing how forgiveness in your heart heals you.

Worship for Sunday, September 6, 2026
Scriptures: Matthew 18:15-20, Romans 13:8-14

Dear Friends,
Our Gospel readings in this season focus on Jesus' teachings about living in community -- as a community of followers of Jesus. This week's Gospel lesson (Matthew 18:15-20) seems like it could be a prickly one: what to do when one of the community sins against you. The three steps sound quite serious and maybe even legalistic. With Jesus, however, we are able to be confident that the purpose is not punishment. The careful steps offer opportunities for accountability, reconciliation, and restoring the unity of the congregation.

Every time we celebrate Holy Communion, as we will this Sunday, we have the opportunity to reconnect when life has drawn us away from where we long to be. If there is something that threatens to separate you from life with God, or that has separated you from another person, let Worship this Sunday be a point of reconnection and even new beginnings.

Worship for Sunday, August 30, 2026
Scripture: Matthew 16:21-28,
Romans 12:9-21
Dear Friends,
In this week's Gospel lesson (Matthew 16:21-28), Jesus' ministry takes a critical turn from the miracles and parables of his public ministry to preparing his disciples for what is to come. When Jesus tells his disciples that he will endure suffering and death (he also says that he will be raised on the third day, but no one seems to hear this), Peter spoke out very sharply against it. Jesus did not receive Peter's rebuke as a sign of Peter's caring; he said, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." Matt. 16:23)

We can relate to Peter. From what we know of this world, we don't want our loved ones to suffer. We don't want to suffer. And as it was for Peter, our connection to this earthly existence can be an obstacle to understanding Jesus.

What does "suffering" mean to you? How do you react when following God's path is not easy or comfortable and does not result quickly in victory?
Our life together in this community of faith allows us to look at ourselves and explore the answers to questions like these in a safe and supportive environment. In our sharing and helping each other, we grow and develop as followers of Jesus Christ. As always, you are invited to join in Worship on Sunday at 10:00 am. I look forward to being with you!
