Worship for Sunday, September 6, 2026
Scriptures: Matthew 18:15-20, Romans 13:8-14

Dear Friends,
Our Gospel readings in this season focus on Jesus' teachings about living in community -- as a community of followers of Jesus. This week's Gospel lesson (Matthew 18:15-20) seems like it could be a prickly one: what to do when one of the community sins against you. The three steps sound quite serious and maybe even legalistic. With Jesus, however, we are able to be confident that the purpose is not punishment. The careful steps offer opportunities for accountability, reconciliation, and restoring the unity of the congregation.

Every time we celebrate Holy Communion, as we will this Sunday, we have the opportunity to reconnect when life has drawn us away from where we long to be. If there is something that threatens to separate you from life with God, or that has separated you from another person, let Worship this Sunday be a point of reconnection and even new beginnings.

Romans 12:9-21
Dear Friends,
In this week's Gospel lesson (Matthew 16:21-28), Jesus' ministry takes a critical turn from the miracles and parables of his public ministry to preparing his disciples for what is to come. When Jesus tells his disciples that he will endure suffering and death (he also says that he will be raised on the third day, but no one seems to hear this), Peter spoke out very sharply against it. Jesus did not receive Peter's rebuke as a sign of Peter's caring; he said, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." Matt. 16:23)

We can relate to Peter. From what we know of this world, we don't want our loved ones to suffer. We don't want to suffer. And as it was for Peter, our connection to this earthly existence can be an obstacle to understanding Jesus.

What does "suffering" mean to you? How do you react when following God's path is not easy or comfortable and does not result quickly in victory?
Our life together in this community of faith allows us to look at ourselves and explore the answers to questions like these in a safe and supportive environment. Worship for Sunday, August 16, 2026
Scripture: Matthew 15:21-28

Dear Friends,
With this week's Gospel passage ( Matthew 15:21-28), we begin a shift in Jesus' ministry from the public debates and miracles to something deeper. As Jesus' followers, we are invited to consider how our faith and understanding move from focusing on Jesus' power and authority to living as Jesus' disciples. How do you see Jesus' identity and purpose? And what, then, does that mean about how we are to live as individuals, and in community small and large, local and global?

Let us come together on Sunday at 10:00 am to worship. As we connect with God and each other, may we be renewed in strength, focus, and love for our shared journey of faith!

Worship for Sunday, August 9, 2026
Scriptures: Matthew 14:22-33, Romans 10:5-15

Dear Friends,
Jesus walking on the water (Matthew 14:22-33) is well-known; the imagery and drama of this miracle have lent themselves to adoring and inspiring works of art. And yet, Jesus walking on the water is only part of this story, and it's possible that it's not the most important part. In some paintings, Peter brings the story closer to us; he is depicted sometimes as stepping out on the water, reaching out to Jesus' outstretched hand. I have also seen art where Peter is in the water after he lost confidence and began to sink.

With Jesus, the miracles do not happen just to impress (or, in the disciples' case. to terrify!). It is our responses that help Scripture come alive in our own experience and in our sharing with each other. I invite you to read the Matthew passage and see how you identify with Peter. Together we help each other hear Christ's invitation and step out in faith. How are you being invited these days?
