ZIMRI, KING FOR ONE WEEK by Daniel L. Black
1 KINGS 16:15-20

MEDITATION—After the nation of Israel divided into the Northern Kingdom called Israel and the Southern Kingdom called Judah (933 BC), each kingdom had nineteen kings. Zimri, the fifth king of Israel (886 BC), who became king for a week by means of treason and murder and took his own life “because of the sins which he had committed in doing evil in the sight of the LORD” (v. 19).

SCRIPTURE—1 KINGS 16:15-20—KING JAMES VERSION

15 In the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. And the people were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.

16 And the people that were encamped heard say, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.

17 And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.

18 And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king's house, and burnt the king's house over him with fire, and died.

19 For his sins which he sinned in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.

20 Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his treason that he wrought, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

KINGDOM OF ISRAEL DIVIDED—Arrogance, injustice, and lust for power cause division.
1 Kings 11:1-13; 11:42-12:24: https://youtu.be/ZJyRYTvrGCg?si=FWQmObv0XqVRZHI9&t=3717

LESSON OVERVIEW—Today’s narrative marks a pivotal turning point in Israel’s history. In chapter 11, Solomon’s disobedience—especially his idolatry caused by marrying pagan women—resulted in God’s judgment that the kingdom would be divided after his reign. Chapter 12 fulfilled this prophecy as Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, alienated the people with his harsh leadership, causing the ten northern tribes under Jeroboam to secede and form the Northern Kingdom. This division ushered in political and spiritual turmoil for Israel and Judah. These chapters show the importance of covenant faithfulness and the consequences of forsaking God.

HISTORICAL-LITERARY BACKGROUND—During Solomon’s reign, despite his renowned wisdom and devotion to God, he permitted the worship of pagan gods in Israel—a choice that carried terrible consequences. Swayed by his many foreign wives, Solomon permitted the construction of altars and high places for worship of deities such as Ashtoreth of the Zidonians, Chemosh of the Moabites, and Molech of the Ammonites. Idolatry violated Israel’s covenant with God, leading to a gradual spiritual decline. This disobedience not only displeased God but also laid a dangerous example for future rulers, ultimately contributing to the kingdom’s division and ongoing idolatry in Israel and Judah.

SATURDAY—SEPTEMBER 5, 2026
GOD’S NEVER-ENDING KINGDOM by Daniel L. Black
REVELATION 11:15-19

MEDITATION— Throughout the Bible, the idea of God’s kingdom is based on the fact that God created everything, and therefore He is the King, the Ruler, over everything. With sovereign power and authority, God rules over all earthly kingdoms. However, earthly kingdoms come and go, and in the end, there will be only God’s kingdom, and His kingdom will continue forever.

SCRIPTURE—REVELATION 11:15-19—KING JAMES VERSION

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,

17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
