THE ISRAELITES PUNISHED WITH WORK by Daniel L. Black
EXODUS 5:1-9

MEDITATION— Throughout human history, tyrannical rulers have imposed excessively hard work on people as a form of punishment for not conforming to the will of the ruler. Over time, most of the Israelites living in ancient Egypt were reduced to a state of slavery by the Pharaohs. God, working through Moses, saved the Israelites from slavery and made them His redeemed people.

SCRIPTURE—EXODUS 5:1-9—KING JAMES VERSION

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.

3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.

4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.

5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.

6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.

8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 2

BIBLICAL WISDOM FOR WORK—A right attitude toward work makes it more rewarding.
STUDY TEXT: PROVERBS 14:23; 18:9; 23:4; 24:27, 30-34; ECCLESIASTES 1:3;2:4-6, 11, 18-23; 5:12; 9:7-10; 11:1-6; 12:13-14

LESSON OVERVIEW— The significance of our labors comes through our relationship with God. Work is rewarding when performed with a proper attitude, but can seem mundane and meaningless when engaged in a self-serving rather than a God-honoring fashion. The Book of Proverbs illustrates that work can yield profit, but perhaps just as importantly, it can provide us with purpose. The lazy person often lacks both means and meaning in their lives. Ecclesiastes reveals that work that does not honor God may bring profit but still lacks significance, thus becoming vain or meaningless.

HISTORICAL-LITERARY BACKGROUND— Given that King Solomon received special wisdom from God in response to his humble request (1 Kings 3:5-12), it is likely that most of the Book of Proverbs was written by Solomon. Proverbs contains godly wisdom and identifies behaviors that characterize the wise, such as “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (9:10). Some of the proverbs came from “the words of the wise” (22:17), but most were either written or collected by Solomon. The Book of Ecclesiastes also appears to reflect wisdom from Solomon’s life, concluding that without God, life, work, and pleasure are vain.

SATURDAY—JUNE 13, 2026
WORKERS IN AN EVIL OCCUPATION by Daniel L. Black
ACTS 19:24-32

MEDITATION— It has always been God’s will for humans to be engaged in work (Genesis 2:15). However, in this imperfect world, not all work is good and pleasing to God. The men of Ephesus and the surrounding region, whose occupation was that of making and selling silver images of the goddess Diana, were engaged in evil work. Only good work honors God and benefits people.

SCRIPTURE—ACTS 19:24-32—KING JAMES VERSION

24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused: and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
