Prayer is the way we communicate to God, and how we express ourselves in prayer is personal and individual. But the content Jesus included when He instructed His disciples, “this is how you should pray” (Matthew 6:9-13), provides a model which may be helpful to you as a family. Do you have a brother eating with the pigs? Have you hesitated to go to him? Have you judged him deserving of what he is bringing on himself? In the words of Paul from Romans 2:4, “Do you disregard the riches of God’s kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that His kindness leads to repentance?” Consider today how you might be an instrument of God’s kindness to that brother.

In the following quotation, C. S. Lewis was reflecting on the relationship between God the Father and God the Son. I thought it might be thought-provoking for all of us as we have focused on fatherhood today. The calling of fatherhood is so important in this world. But by far the most important fatherhood is that which we can experience with our heavenly Father through putting our trust wholly in Jesus His Son. Happy Father's Day!

Do you ever feel that what you portray of your spiritual life on the outside is not the same as what is true of you on the inside? That people see you as a spiritually mature person or family, but you know that is not what is really true of you? One of my favorite quotations from C. S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity really convicts me and may make you think as well:

“If I am a field that contains nothing but grass-seed, I cannot produce wheat. Cutting the grass may keep it short: but I shall still produce grass and no wheat. If I want to produce wheat, the change must go deeper than the surface. I must be plowed up and re-sown.”

I am often aware that I need some plowing up and re-sowing. In the Parable of the Sower, the seed is the Word of God. God’s Word is what I need sown in my heart, and it is God’s Word which will produce wheat instead of just grass. Let’s spend some time hearing from God in His Word and looking to the Holy Spirit to plow us up and sow the Word of Truth in our hearts this week. And let’s remember that Jesus said several times in His explanation of the Parable of the Sower: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Do you know a couple whose marriage has been not quite what it should be for years? Have you had a friend whose divorce left him/her hurting and bitter and feeling rejected, even by the church? Is there a family you know who is grieving over a child who has walked away from the Lord and from them? Darby and I answer “yes” to each of these questions.

Do you believe that Christ-centered marriages and families are a vital part of God’s plan to advance His kingdom? Are you confident in the Word of God by which God has given us everything we need for life and godliness? Is it your conviction that if we can entrust our eternal destiny to the transforming power of the Gospel, we can entrust even the most broken relationships to that same power to comfort and heal, to restore and renew? Our answer to these questions is “yes” as well. It is why we started Turning Hearts Ministries sixteen years ago.

During those years, by God’s grace, we have had the privilege to:

- teach the Word of God in many homes, small groups, Christian schools, and churches;

- present the Gospel hundreds of times through demonstrating the revelation of Christ in the Passover Seder;

- teach seminars and conferences in numerous states and even internationally;

- prepare written Bible study materials on a variety passages of Scripture and numerous topics;

- teach and facilitate several monthly men’s Bible study fellowship groups in central Alabama;

- consult with many pastors and church leaders on ministry to families and Biblical reconciliation;

- conduct pre-marriage and marriage get-away weekends to strengthen and equip couples; and

- provide Biblical counsel to many couples, families, and even churches in difficulty.

We have undertaken these and other ministry efforts with the purpose of strengthening, encouraging, equipping, and restoring marriages and families for God's glory.
