The Lutheran Church of Arcata

The Lutheran Church of Arcata To love and serve all people, guided by the teaching and example of Jesus Christ.

The Lutheran Church of Arcata is committed to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ to its community, to the Cal Poly Humboldt campus, and to all the world through its fellowship with the Church at large. Our doors are wide open to all Lutherans and, indeed, to all people who seek to know and share the saving love of God, which is offered so freely in the redemption which is ours through the d

eath and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Comprised of both ELCA and LC-MS affiliates, our church emphasizes Christ’s unifying love and grace, and strives in a small way to reflect Jesus’s prayer that all believers “be one” (John 17:21). In addition to its focus on Christ’s ecumenical Gospel message, The Lutheran Church of Arcata is notable also for its beautiful architecture and setting. Designed by local architect, Marvin Trump, and constructed in the early 1970's, the church’s sanctuary is a gorgeous light-filled space, ensconced in a Redwood forest at the edge of the Cal Poly Humboldt campus and the City of Arcata’s Redwood Park.

I’ve been working on a project: creating a “Pastor Wall” in our narthex, featuring the previous pastors who have served this congregation over the last 50+ years. My hope is that these photos will honor the legacy of those who built and sustained this church, shepherded God’s people, and kept the congregation focused on Christ.

As we remember each pastor, we also remember the generations of people who worshiped and served here, and all those who were baptized, married, confirmed, and memorialized in this place. Their story continues in us today.

I thank God for all the people who have shared the love of Christ with me, and for the imperfect yet faithful Church that has preserved and proclaimed the Good News throughout the centuries.

Look for the “Pastor Wall” soon at the Lutheran Church of Arcata. As you do, take a moment to remember those who have helped bring Christ into your life. Give thanks for them—and consider how God might be calling you to do the same for someone else.

Peace,
Pastor Taylor

"This month at our church, as we culminate the Easter season, we will remember Christ’s promises before His earthly departure and celebrate His continued presence with us through the power of the Holy Spirit. We will mark these moments with prayer, music, worship—and food, of course!

In all of these events, we seek to remember the living presence of Christ—still at work among us, always calling us into a greater love of God and neighbor. I look forward to sharing this joyful season with you all!"

"When I think back to my childhood, I can still recall the deep sense of yearning that grew throughout December—the anticipation of Christmas Eve’s mysteries and the great joy of Christmas morning. Advent invites us into that same posture of expectant waiting. As you enter this season, my hope is that you may rediscover a sense of childlike wonder and a renewed openness to God’s presence. May you embrace the kind of longing that makes room for mystery, hope, and holy surprise."

"School is back in session, and the church parking lot is again full with student vehicles. Soon, it will also be full with the redwood fronds that are turning orange and brown in the trees around us. It’s a beautiful time of year, and a great time for continued learning and growth.

As we transition from summer to fall, our life together as a church also takes on fresh energy. Adult Education will resume after worship with an 'Adult (Re)Confirmation' course — a time to explore the tenets of our Lutheran tradition, whether for the first time, or as a renewal of faith. We will also begin a Grief Support Group, offering a place for those carrying loss to share and walk together in hope. And our Choir will soon lift their voices again in rehearsals, adding beauty and joy to our worship on Sunday mornings.

In addition to these opportunities for learning, healing, and praising, I pray that the Gospel will continue to strengthen, stretch, inspire, and challenge you as we seek to learn and grow together in Jesus Christ."

"In his encounters with the world around him, Jesus paints a vision of God’s Kingdom that is not marked by status or self-preservation, but by generosity, mercy, and inclusion. Whether he's healing on the sabbath or eating at the house of a Pharisee, Jesus regularly breaks religious and social norms to show us that God’s table is wide — and all are invited to the banquet."

"[This month's] texts remind us that Christian discipleship doesn’t have to be flashy. It can simply look like compassion given to those in need. It can look like pausing to tune into God’s presence even when the to-do list is a mile long. And it can look like turning to God in prayer for all things. These are not grand performances. They are simple acts of love and faithfulness in the midst of our busy lives. But Jesus teaches us that it’s in these very moments that the Spirit is moving, and God’s grace is at work."
