There are many “gray areas” in life that God’s Word doesn’t directly address, which allow freedom. But freedom is never private because others are watching us. Sometimes when we exercise our freedom without love, it creates confusion and stumbling blocks for others.

This week we will learn that spiritual maturity isn’t proven by how much freedom we can exercise, but by how much we are willing to surrender for the sake of another’s faith. Like Christ, our first concern shouldn’t be about asserting our own rights, but how can we live for God’s glory and the good of our brothers and sisters.

Because of the freedom of the gospel, all of us could fall into the trap of believing we can live however we want. But today the Apostle Paul will teach us that even when something is permissible, it may not be beneficial, helpful, or advisable.

Greater yet, because Jesus has bought us with His blood on Calvary’s cross and His Spirit dwells within us, we’re not free to use our bodies any way we desire. Instead, out of love and honor for our Savior, we use our bodies for His purposes and glory.

Have you ever noticed how we can get preoccupied with the “next new thing?” Maybe it’s the job promotion you really want, or the new car or home that’s just beyond affordability. If you’re single, maybe it’s looking for the right person to marry. If you’re married maybe, it’s finding a new way to spend time with your spouse. In today’s text Paul cautions against getting so focused on worldly distractions that we lose sight of what’s most important. Rather, Paul writes we should “live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.” Come and see!

As we continue our journey through First Corinthians, today we are focusing on chapter 6. The Apostle Paul rebukes believers for taking fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to secular court rather than settling matters privately and biblically. When we are preoccupied with our rights, this diminishes our responsibility to exemplify Christ’s love, forgiveness and wisdom to the watching world. It is far better to suffer wrong, let things go, and forgive rather than resorting to the ways of the world and hurting the church’s public witness.
