On Whitsun 21st May 1738 Charles Wesley experienced an overwhelming sense of God. Three days later, his brother John experienced a similar awakening!

That evening John visits St Paul’s Cathedral and is inspired by an anthem sung by the choir. John writes in his journal, “ In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street (London). About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed”. This was a defining moment for John who began, traveling and preaching.
In 1739, a year after his heart warming moment, John Wesley preaches at Bristol in the open air for the first time and building of The New Room begins.

The term “strangely warmed” has become a well-known Methodist term that represents the perceived power of the Holy Spirit.
