Sermon Summary: Playing It S.A.F.E.
Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:1–9
Deuteronomy 34:1–9 tells us about Moses reaching the end of his journey. God allowed Moses to see the Promised Land, but Moses did not enter it. Even though Moses had faithfully served God, his journey ended before he could experience the promise firsthand. Joshua was then appointed to lead the Israelites forward, filled with wisdom and prepared for the responsibility God had given him.
Today's sermon, “Playing It S.A.F.E.,” reminds us that following God isn't about simply staying comfortable, avoiding risks, or playing it safe by the world's standards. It's about trusting God's direction, being obedient to His Word, and preparing ourselves to fulfill the purpose He has for our lives.
We can learn several important lessons from this chapter:
* S — Surrender to God's Plan: Moses trusted God's direction, even when things didn't turn out the way he may have hoped. We must surrender our plans and trust that God's plan is greater than our own.
* A — Accept God's Authority: God is in control, and His Word guides our steps. We must be willing to accept His correction, direction, and timing.
* F — Faithfully Finish Your Assignment: Moses served God throughout his life. Even when we don't get to see the outcome of everything we've worked toward, our faithfulness still matters.
* E — Equip and Encourage the Next Generation: Moses laid hands on Joshua, preparing him to lead God's people. We are called to pour into others, share our wisdom, and help the next generation walk in faith.
# # # The Takeaway
Moses didn't get to enter the Promised Land, but that doesn't mean his life or his leadership was a failure. His obedience, faithfulness, and influence helped prepare God's people for what came next.
Sometimes playing it S.A.F.E. means trusting God when we cannot see the whole picture, obeying when it's difficult, finishing our assignment faithfully, and preparing others to carry the mission forward.
We may not always get to see the promises fulfilled in our own lifetime, but we can trust that God is still working. Our responsibility is to be faithful with what He has placed in front of us today.
“Be strong and of a good courage; for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land…” — Joshua 1:6 (KJV)
Reflection question: Am I playing it safe because I'm trusting God, or am I staying comfortable because I'm afraid to step out in faith?
