Day 57 — My Life

Psalm 23:6 - “…all the days of my life.”

David has given us a lot to think about so far. This psalm has been so powerful and packed with meaning and now we come to two of the most personal words: “my life.”

There’s a difference between living days for God and living a life for Him.

Every one of us is given days. We wake up, go to work, take care of our responsibilities, eat, sleep, spend time with people we love and do it all over again. But eventually those days become something bigger. They become our life.

That raises a much bigger question. Now it’s time to make this real and personal:

What is YOUR life about?

We can spend our days doing a bunch of stuff and never stop to ask that question. We can spend our lives pursuing success, security, comfort, possessions or just trying to make it through another week. None of those things are necessarily wrong but they were never meant to be the reason we live.

Paul said something that has always been a challenge for me: “To live is Christ…”

Paul wasn’t just teaching a theology class there. He was describing his life.

Romans 12:1 gives us a picture of what that looked like: “Therefore … present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God…”

Paul wasn’t suggesting that we give God some of our days. He was calling us to present our lives to God.

That’s different.

If we think of Christianity as something we add to our lives—a Sunday morning, a prayer before bed, a Bible reading, a few good deeds—Jesus becomes an accessory to our lives. He isn’t interested in that. He calls us to give Him our lives.

The days God gives us eventually become the life we lived. So the question isn’t, “What did I do today?” The deeper question is, “What am I doing with my life?”

If you had to describe your life, would you be able to say, “To live is Christ”?

That’s a worthy goal for us. Not a perfect life or a famous one. Not even an easy life. Just a life that belongs to Christ.

Someday, our days will finally be behind us. What will matter most is what we did with the life those days became.

So take a moment and ask yourself: What is my life about? Then ask God:

“Let my life be about You.”

It’s Sunday! It’s time to take a look at another old and historic church building!

This is the charming, old United Presbyterian Church of Canal Fulton, Ohio. Very early one morning, I set off on a barn-storming trip and passed by this old church right as the moon was sitting behind its belfry. It has been a favorite picture of mine ever since.

The Presbyterian members trace their roots through a couple of churches near here. Organized as early as 1811, the first presbytery churches were known as the Newman Creek Church and the Pigeon Run Church (which later dissolved). In 1814, the two churches united their congregations and a church was built in 1816, “across the road from the site of the old Newman Creek cemetery”. A finer structure was built in 1820, but dissension prevailed. In 1842, the church dissolved and about 100 members built the present building in Canal Fulton. Educational facilities were added and the church was remodeled. In the 60’s, the Salem Reformed Church and the Presbyterian Church were without pastors, so the two congregations united in 1966, to form the Federated Church. This union lasted over 20 years, until the churches were closed and sold.

The building still stands, but it is currently privately owned. It’s a pretty sight but it’s also a testimony to how dissension and politics destroy what they touch. I’ve seen it happen and it hurts every time.

Pray for this community. There are plenty of good churches there that are willing to serve and preach the gospel.

How Do I Get Home from Here?

Jesus willingly went to the cross and gave His life for our sins. He took the judgment for our sin on Himself and rose again from the dead. As Peter wrote:

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross.” — 1 Peter 2:24

Jesus certainly gave us an example to follow, but He did something infinitely greater than just showing us how to live. He did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He made atonement for our sin.

There is only one way to God because there is only One Savior who was given that mission and who accomplished God’s provision for our salvation.

This isn’t a question of whether Muhammad was sincere or whether Buddha said things that sound wise. It isn’t a question of whether people in other religions are kind, moral, sincere or genuinely searching for God.

The issue is sin.

How is our sin removed? There is only one answer: Jesus.

The apostles proclaimed it clearly:

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12

So when Christians say that Jesus is the only way, we aren’t claiming that Christians are better than everyone else. Quite the opposite. We’re admitting that we couldn’t save ourselves either. We needed a Savior.

God, in His grace and lovingkindness, reached down to us and provided One. There is one way to the Father—not because God is unwilling to save, but because God provided the way He chose to save.

The Way is Jesus.
The Truth is Jesus.
The Life is Jesus.

That’s not the arrogant claim of Christians. That’s the gracious invitation of God.

But someone may still ask, “Isn’t it unfair for God to provide only one way?”

I think we have the question backward. The remarkable thing isn’t that God provided only one way. The remarkable thing is that God provided a way at all.

Christianity isn’t ultimately asking you to choose Jesus because Christianity happens to be your preferred religion. It’s asking you to consider Jesus Himself. Who was He? What did He claim? What did He accomplish on the cross?

That’s the question we need to ponder. Who is He?
