A same-s*x family is a family in which one or more children are raised by two parents of the same gender. These families may be formed through adoption, foster care, surrogacy, or previous relationships. Like all families, same-s*x parent families provide love, guidance, and support to their children. Research shows that children’s well-being depends on stability and care, not the gender or s*xual orientation of their parents. They often face challenges that stem more from social and structural factors rather than family life itself.
Common problems include social stigma and discrimination, legal and policy barriers, and religious and cultural opposition. Despite these challenges, strong support systems, inclusive policies, and affirming environment significantly reduce these difficulties and help same s*x families thrive.

Reflect: As an ONA congregation, how can we provide care, dignity, and practical support so that families know they are safe and respected?

Foster & Adoptive Families
Foster and adoptive families are formed when adults care for children to whom they are not biologically related. Adoption provides a permanent, lifelong family, while foster care offers a temporary, stable home as children’s biological families work toward reunification or another long-term plan. In some cases, foster placements lead to adoption.

Families pursue adoption for many reasons, including medical barriers to biological parenting, a desire to provide stability to children in need, or the wish to expand an existing family. Adoptions may be domestic or international, open or closed, and involve children of all ages. Depending on a child’s history, families may need to address grief, loss, trauma, or attachment challenges. Transracial and international adoptions also require cultural awareness and intentional support of a child’s heritage.

Foster and adoptive families often navigate complex legal processes, financial costs, and ongoing emotional and practical support needs.

Reflect: As a faith community, how can we recognize these realities and offer understanding, encouragement, and sustained support?
