University Readiness
School readiness doesn’t just mean K-12, NKU has a program called UCAP = University Connect and Persist that helps students start their college program and stay there until graduation.

For example, 1,098 students received donor-funded scholarships, 301students accessed textbooks through the UCAP textbook lending program to reduce financial burdens, students facing unexpected financial hardship received over $80,000 in UCAP retention funds, and 96 students were able to borrow caps and gowns so they could walk across the commencement stage. In addition, 2,174 students visited FUEL NKU on campus for food and basics so they could stay focused on earning their degree.

As we acknowledge that School Readiness doesn’t end at high school graduation, let us be thankful for all St. Paul’s does to increase school readiness and pray for students as they continue to strive to achieve their goals.

Reflect: How can I help those students heading off to college?

Family Resource Centers
While over 3,000 FRCs exist nationwide across 38 states and Washington D.C., only a few states – such as KY – have mandated statewide, school-based networks. The primary goal of these centers is to remove non-academic barriers to learning as a means to enhance student academic success. FRCs have established a record of success based on improved student performance in class work, homework, and peer relations as reported by teachers. Parents, too, report they experience greater satisfaction and involvement with the schools as a result of assistance through their local Family Resource Centers.

Today we offer thanks to St. Paul’s for partnering with our local elementary schools to reduce non-academic barriers to learning. We supply weekend food bags to kids each May through the Backpack Program, provide school supplies, so kids have what they need at the beginning of the school year and are ready to learn, and provide food and gifts at Christmas. Thank you for making a difference in our local students lives so that they are ready to learn.

Reflect: How can I help remove nonacademic barriers to children in our community?

Schultute

Since this church was founded by German immigrants, I wanted to share the German tradition of Schultute – literally a “school bag” - a large cone shaped package filled with treats, school supplies, and small toys given to kids on the first day of school. The photo in your bulletin is my mom in Germany on August 10, 1941 on her first day of first grade. A child’s very first day of school, called Einschulung, which is considered a rite of passage for a child and is celebrated by gifts, taking photos, and exploring what’s inside the schultute/school cone. Each summer when we collect school supplies we are helping kids celebrate and prepare for a new academic year. Thank you for your generosity and faithfulness in serving our community.

Reflect: What traditions do you have to celebrate the first day of school?
