New Mexico’s Las Cruces Diocese is engaged in a legal battle against the Trump administration to save their property, which includes Mount Cristo Rey pilgrimage site, from the government’s effort to seize it for building a sector of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. A case was filed by the Las Cruces Diocese on June 19, which was jointly supported by Bishop Peter Baldacchino of Las Cruces; Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso, Texas; and Bishop Michael Buerkel Hunn of the Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Episcopal Diocese of Rio Grand. Expressing their disagreement to the government move, the Diocese of Las Cruces filed an opposition response in U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico, saying: “This affront to religious liberty cannot stand.” The government is taking measures to seize over 14 acres of land that include Mount Cristo Rey in Sunland Park, New Mexico. A 29-foot limestone statue of Jesus Christ is the key attraction of the 4,675-foot Mount.
