Salakapat is a special religious festival that is celebrated in the seventh lunar month of the year. This is a tradition since the time of the lord Buddha . Generally, people brought their offerings to the monk at the temple when the weather was good for farming and the harvests were plentiful. However, when there was a drought, people were not able to give their offerings to all the monks. They came up with a raffle system.
This raffle allowed people to select monks from a drawing and present them offerings . People were content with this resolution of the an annual festival for Buddhists in Thailand . The religious literature devoted to the origin of Sa-Laug- Pud and its history is plentiful.
In Thailand, Salakapat is a tradition of offering things to monks by drawing lots. It is called Boon Khao Salak or Boon Khao Sak by Isan (northeastern) people, and Taan Guay Salak or Kin Guay Salak by northern people. In the central region, it is celebrated around the sixth lunar month until the beginning of Buddhist Lent (May-July). In the northern and northeastern regions, it is celebrated between the tenth lunar month to the full moon of the eleventh lunar month
