For 300 years, the Cross of Jesus was lost. Then Saint Helena went looking for it.

Around A.D. 326, Saint Helena—the mother of Emperor Constantine—traveled to Jerusalem on pilgrimage in search of the places connected to the life, death, and Resurrection of Christ.

According to ancient Christian tradition, excavations near Calvary uncovered three crosses. Through a miraculous sign, one was identified as the True Cross on which Jesus Christ had been crucified.

Helena preserved the sacred relic, and portions of the True Cross were eventually carried throughout the Christian world for veneration.

Her discovery helped transform Jerusalem into one of Christianity’s great pilgrimage destinations and is forever connected with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over the sites traditionally associated with Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.

What had been buried for centuries became one of Christianity’s most treasured relics.

Gospel of the Day (John 3,13-17)

Jesus said to Nicodemus : "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross: on the day following the dedication of the Basilica of the Resurrection, which was erected over the Holy Sepulchre, the Holy Cross is exalted and honored as the trophy of Christ’s Paschal victory and the sign which is to appear in the heavens, announcing to the whole world his Second Coming.

Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood

Heavenly Father, You have created us for a definite purpose. Grant us the grace to know the path You have planned for each of us in this life, and to respond with a generous "Yes".

Make my parish, my home, and my heart fruitful ground for your gift of vocations to the priesthood of Jesus Christ.

May our young men respond to your call with courage and zeal. Stir among them a desire and the strength to be good and holy priests.

We make our prayer for priestly vocations to You, Father; in the Holy Spirit, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
