Book Buddies Summer Reading Camp is a four-week literacy initiative made possible through the generous support of the Cannon Foundation and The Duke Endowment. Designed for rising first graders from schools across Albemarle, our program is focused on closing literacy gaps, preventing the "summer slide," and helping students build a strong foundation for future reading success.
Each day, our campers participate in small-group literacy instruction, interactive learning stations, enrichment activities, and welcome special guests from our community who help foster a love of reading.
Last week, we were honored to welcome local author Pam Rutherford, who shared one of her published children's books with our campers. Her story carried powerful messages of self-love, confidence, and believing in yourself—lessons that beautifully complemented the work our students have been doing all summer. As our campers continue to strengthen their literacy skills, they are also growing in confidence as readers, learners, and individuals.
A heartfelt thank you to Pam Rutherford for spending time with our campers and reminding them that every child has a unique story to tell and incredible potential to achieve great things.
