St. John's Lutheran Church - Albany A 🏳️‍⚧️Reconciling in Christ🏳️‍🌈 congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) St. WE ARE A RECONCILING IN CHRIST (RIC) CONGREGATION.

John’s is a congregation of the Upstate New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). OUR MISSION
We worship God, serve faithfully, and reach out. Trusting in the extravagant grace of God that sets us free, we affirm the sacred worth and dignity of our siblings in Christ – of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, racial and ethnic identities, ages, abil

ities, and socio-economic statuses. We confess the church’s complicity in systems that harm God’s people, including homophobia and transphobia, sexism, racism and white supremacy, and ableism. Together, as a community of Jesus followers, rooted in grace, we commit ourselves to the work of racial equity and anti-racism and to confronting and dismantling all systems of injustice and oppression in all we do and say. LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and Cemetery is located on the original and ancestral homelands of the Mohican, Haudenosaunee, and Schaghticoke peoples, and we give thanks for their presence here since time immemorial. We also wish to acknowledge and honor all our Indigenous siblings who have and continue to call this land their home.

Step one: ✅

Thanks to all who stayed after worship to help (mostly) clear the space to make way for new hardwood floors to be installed in the sanctuary over the next two weeks!

Work begins later this week with replacing the laminate floors in the kitchen, hallway, and bathrooms with new vinyl plank flooring while the wood in the sanctuary ‘acclimates’ (thank God for professional contractors…they don’t teach you these things in seminary).

But wait, there’s more! Because one major capital improvement project in two weeks isn’t enough, we’re also getting a new roof — just in time for another upstate winter. Leaks be gone!

"'Get behind me, Satan!'
might not be the harsh rebuke we assume it is –
although it certainly must have gotten Peter’s attention –
but perhaps instead an invitation:

"'Get in line behind me.'
Reorient your priorities in line with God's reign
and God's Messiah:
Love one another,
and let love be genuine.
Pursue hospitality.
Rejoice with those who rejoice,
and weep with those who weep.
Feed your enemies.
Do not be arrogant.
Overcome evil with good."

"Jesus changes his mind –
there is the scandal of this story
and the good news:
Jesus changes his mind
toward an even greater inclusivity.

"If Jesus, who, while fully divine, is also fully human,
can make mistakes
and change his mind,
then so can we.

"There is grace in that –
permission to make mistakes,
own up to them,
and learn from them,
so that we can preach and practice
a radically inclusive and expansive reign of God
that is for everyone."

Today, the church commemorates the feast of Mary, Mother of Our Lord. What's a Lutheran to do with Mary? Click below to read six short reflections about why Mary is for Lutherans (and other Christians) too.

Almighty God, in choosing the virgin Mary to be the mother of your Son, you made known your gracious regard for the poor, the lowly, and the despised. Grant us grace to receive your word in humility, and so to be made one with your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Prayer of the Day for Mary, Mother of Our Lord from Evangelical Lutheran Worship)

"No doubt
there is fear in this story –
the presence of Jesus
doesn’t negate the presence of the storm.

"And there is also great faith
in this story –
the presence of the storm
doesn’t negate the presence of Jesus."
