On September 21, the yellow heat warning was extended to 16 districts in mainland Portugal, with some areas under warning until September 23 and temperatures around 37°C expected in Coimbra.
More worrying is the growing water shortage in the north and center.

🔥 Summer is over, but the heat and wildfire risk are not.
On September 21, 2026, parts of Portugal, France and Spain are still facing unusually high temperatures.
More than 60 municipalities in Portugal are at the highest rural fire-risk level, with Coimbra expected to reach 37°C.
Three departments in southern France are under the highest wildfire alert, while some parts of Spain are around 10°C above normal.
