FEAST OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE

She is one of the most important saints in the Gospels, and since 2016 the Church celebrates her as a Feast, not just a Memorial. Pope Francis raised her celebration to give her the same dignity as the Apostles.

Who was St. Mary Magdalene?

Mary Magdalene was from Magdala, a town on the Sea of Galilee. The Gospels tell us:

- She was delivered by Jesus from 7 demons (Luke 8:2)

- She was a faithful disciple who followed Jesus and provided for Him out of her means (Luke 8:1-3)

- She stood at the foot of the Cross with Mary, the Mother of Jesus (John 19:25)

- She was the first witness to the Resurrection. On Easter morning she went to the tomb, met the Risen Christ, and He sent her to announce it to the Apostles.

Because of that last role, the early Fathers called her "Apostola Apostolorum" - "Apostle to the Apostles".

The Gospel Message for Today

The main Gospel for the feast is usually John 20:1-2, 11-18.
It’s the scene at the empty tomb:

- Mary was weeping outside the tomb... Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

- She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” which means Teacher.

- Jesus said to her, “Go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father...’”

- Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.”

Key themes:

1. Encounter: She sought Jesus even in grief. And He called her by name.

2. Mission: She was the first to be sent to proclaim the Resurrection. That’s why she’s patroness of evangelizers.

3. Conversion & Fidelity: From someone healed of great suffering to the most faithful witness at the Cross and the Tomb.

Why this Feast matters for us today

1. Hope for sinners: Tradition has often linked her with repentance. She shows that no past disqualifies you from becoming a great witness of Christ.

2. Dignity of Women in the Church: She had a leading role in the earliest Christian community. The Church holds her up as a model of discipleship and proclamation.

3. Personal encounter with the Risen Lord: Like Mary, we are called to hear Jesus call our name, and then to “go and tell” others “I have seen the Lord.”

Brief Prayer to St. Mary Magdalene

St. Mary Magdalene,
Witness of the Risen Christ and Apostle to the Apostles,
Pray for us that we may seek Jesus with a faithful heart,
Hear Him call us by name,
And courageously proclaim His Resurrection to the world.
Amen.

In the Diocese of Mangochi and worldwide, many parishes with women’s groups, laity councils, and evangelization teams take her as a patron today because of her zeal.

The Official Opening Mass of the AMECEA Plenary Assembly was celebrated today at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi.

The Eucharistic celebration gathered thousands of people from across the AMECEA region. The Holy Mass was also concelebrated by Tens of Bishops and Archbishops from member countries.

The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) is ably represented at the Plenary.

We invoke the intercession of the Holy Spirit and pray for the fruitful deliberations and success of the Plenary Assembly, that it may bear abundant fruit for the mission of the Church in Eastern Africa.

DIOCESAN ADCCOM HOLDS DAY OF RECOLLECTION AT DMI – ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST UNIVERSITY

Mangochi — Members of the Association of Diocesan Clergy of the Catholic Diocese of Mangochi (ADCCOM) gathered for a one-day of Recollection held at DMI – St. John the Baptist University, Mangochi.

The recollection, held under the theme “Called to be Shepherds” drawn from John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”, was facilitated by Fr. Boniface Kasambwe.

The spiritual exercise drew participation from diocesan priests across the Diocese of Mangochi.

In his reflection, Fr. Kasambwe invited the clergy to renew their commitment to the priestly vocation, to pastoral charity, and to the care of souls entrusted to them, in imitation of Christ the Good Shepherd.

Such periods of recollection provide clergy with a sacred opportunity for prayer, fraternal communion, and spiritual renewal, in keeping with the Church’s tradition of ongoing priestly formation. As the philosopher Aristotle reminds us, “An unexamined life is not worth living.”

The Diocese of Mangochi continues to promote these moments of spiritual retreat as vital for sustaining zeal in ministry and fidelity to the Gospel.
