According to one US study, 88% of s*x trafficking survivors had seen a healthcare professional while they were still under a trafficker's control. Someone had a chance to step in, but didn't know what to look for.

That's why our prevention team in Uganda met with the Chief Health Officer of Jinja District and trained village health workers from across the district to spot the red flags of trafficking in their patients. Untreated injuries, a companion who won't leave the room, or a patient who seems too frightened to speak freely are just some of the signs.

A health worker who knows what to look for could be the one person who turns a routine appointment into a rescue.

Myth: trafficking starts with a stranger.

Reality: it can start with someone the victim knows and trusts. The UN's Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2024 describes cases where the trafficker was the victim's intimate partner or parent.

We've seen it ourselves. Alice, the first girl admitted to our Mercy Centre, was sold into child labour by her own aunt, 80 miles from home.

Police in Papua New Guinea recently found 39 Indonesian nationals allegedly held against their will in Port Moresby.

They'd been recruited on social media, promised legitimate work, then locked inside a house and forced to run online scams, day after day, with no way out.

Police believe it's linked to a wider trafficking network operating across South-East Asia and the Pacific. Four men have already been detained, with more arrests likely.

This is what modern trafficking increasingly looks like, not always physical labour, but people trapped and forced into cybercrime behind locked doors.

Today, 1,230 girls in Kenya were reached by the Dignity Project.

1,230 girls now have the knowledge, supplies, and support to stay safe, stay in school, and protect themselves from exploitation.

Every one of those girls is a reason we do what we do and a reminder of what's possible when this work reaches the people who need it.

Her own aunt sold her out into child labour, 80 miles from home. Fourteen years old, forced into servitude and abuse until she finally escaped.

That's where Alice's story could have ended. Instead, it's where the Mercy Centre's began, she was our very first admission.

A year on, she's home with her father, pursuing a Cosmetology qualification built on skills she discovered at the Centre. Her aunt and abuser were both prosecuted.

This is why the Mercy Centre exists, not just to rescue girls, but to help them rebuild.
