Last piece of art for this week...the Wedding at Cana (John 2) by Mattia Pretti. Everyone's favourite miracle because it is where Jesus turned the water into wine

Todays artwork...well I am going to be honest I don't know who this is by but I love it. It represents the walk to Emmaus where the post resurrection Jesus met with two of his followers. (Luke 24:13-35) What I like about it most is the fact that despite it taking place in Judea the scene is one of lush greenery which to me represents new life in abundance

Laptop is back up :) This week we will be posting some religious art, first up is Rembrant's presentation of Christ in the temple. The Bible passage is Luke 2:25-35

"25 At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him 26 and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. 27 Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, 28 Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God:

29 “Now, Lord, you have kept your promise,
and you may let your servant go in peace.
30 With my own eyes I have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples:
32 (F)A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles
and bring glory to your people Israel.”
33 The child's father and mother were amazed at the things Simeon said about him. 34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “This child is chosen by God for the destruction and the salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against 35 and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart.”

v29-31 is called the Nunc Dimittis and forms a lot of Churches last prayer at night. v35 is the origin of the dagger through the heart symbol that you see on tattoos. The whole passage is a example of prophecy coming true

The last Christian symbol this week, from Revelation 22:13 the Alpha and the Omega. Referring to Jesus it translates as the first and last

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_and_Omega

Alpha (alpha (Α or α)) and Omega (omega (Ω or ω)), are the first and the last letters of the Greek alphabet and are an appellation of Christ or of God in the Book of Revelation. These couple of letters are used as Christian symbols,[1] and are often combined with the Cross, Chi-rho, or other Christi…

Laptop down so bit basic for today's Christian symbol. The trefoil represents the trinity and Eastern churches are often laid out in the form of a trefoil. Of course trefoils also appear in secular architecture, packs of cards (clubs) and the girl guides badge

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trefoil

Trefoil (from Latin trifolium, "three-leaved plant", French trèfle, Italian trifoglio, German Dreiblatt and Dreiblattbogen) is a graphic form composed of the outline of three overlapping rings used in architecture and Christian symbolism. The term is also applied to other symbols of three-fold shape…

Todays Christian symbol...the dove, often compared to the Holy spirit in the New Testament and also symbolising peace. A dove also bought Noah peace of mind when it flew back to the ark with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. This is Picasso's interpretation

Todays Christian symbol...the Agnus Dei (or Lamb of God). John 1:29 mentions Jesus as a sacrificial lamb whose death takes away the sin of the world. This ancient symbol shows a lamb carrying a flag showing Christs victory over death. The Agnus dei is also the badge of Preston North End Football team

Well we were going to have a Christian symbol but it seems that we have a whole new (old) logo! Great stuff :)
