Say hello to our 2026–27 choral scholars 🎶

Four students, four voices. They lead the sections of the Cathedral Choir, and you’ll hear them every Sunday at the 11.15am Solemn Mass ✨

Alex, tenor: second year Cancer Sciences, who sang at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral when he was younger. Mia, soprano: now in her third year with us, studying Chemistry at NTU. Joe, bass: studying for a Masters in Classics at UoN. Gabriel, counter-tenor: first year Industrial Economics at UoN, who joins us from the London Oratory.

Fancy singing with them? Come along to a Wednesday rehearsal and Peter, our Director of Music, will give you a short, informal audition. Or drop him an email first and tell him a little about your singing. Singers of any faith are welcome to audition 🎵

Halloween night. The Cathedral doors open, the candles out, and no pressure to do anything but come in. 🕯️

This Saturday young adults from Jesus Youth and Club 3:16 will be out on the streets around North Circus Street, inviting anyone passing to step inside, light a candle and sit for a few quiet minutes. The evening begins at 6.30pm with Mass celebrated by Bishop Patrick, then the Cathedral stays open in candlelight for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament until 9.30pm. 🙏

You don’t need to be Catholic, or anything at all. Come for five minutes or stay the whole evening. ✨

Bring a friend who’d never usually set foot in a church. 🤍

💗 Breast cancer. Pink October. Mary Potter.

Ever thought there might be a connection?

In 1878, in a small convent in Hyson Green, a 30-year-old woman called Mary Potter had surgery for breast cancer. She had a weak heart, so the doctors could give her only a tiny amount of chloroform. Seven months later the cancer came back, and she went through the same operation again.

She lived for another 35 years. The little community she had founded the year before, in an old stocking factory on Lenton Street where the first Sisters slept on bags of straw, became the Little Company of Mary: women who cared for the sick and kept watch with the dying, first in Nottingham and then far beyond it. 🤍

Her last words, the Sisters tell us, were these: “Thank God always for the happiness and beauty of life – it is beautiful.”

Mary now rests here, at Nottingham Cathedral. The Church calls her Venerable Mary Potter, which means she’s on the road to being recognised as a saint.

As this month draws to a close, we’re holding in prayer everyone living with breast cancer, everyone recovering, everyone grieving, and everyone sitting alongside them: partners, friends, children, nurses and carers. 💗

Mary walked that road herself. If you’re carrying something like it, you can bring it to her wherever you are, and ask her to pray with you. 🙏

Her tomb is closed for a few more weeks while restoration work goes on in the Cathedral. We’ll let you know when you can visit her again. In the meantime, you can discover more of her story at the Mary Potter Heritage Centre, just round the corner, by appointment.

In November the Church remembers those who have died. This year we’re marking the month with music 🎶

Nottingham Cathedral Choir will sing Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem: a setting of the prayers for the dead, woven from ancient plainchant melodies. It’s gentle, luminous music, and the Cathedral is the place to hear it. Come and listen, remember someone you love, or simply sit and let the music do its work 🤍

Want to work in heritage conservation? 🎨

If you’re an undergraduate or a recent postgraduate, this Friday you can join the Cliveden Conservation team here at Nottingham Cathedral to learn about our Restoring Pugin project, and about the varied careers in heritage conservation.

Meet the conservators, trainees and conservation managers working to restore Pugin’s masterpiece, and hear about their career journeys. Take a tour of the Cathedral, with a behind-the-scenes visit to the conservation works. Then find out how research and analysis has made it possible to recreate Pugin’s decorations, and see the techniques and skills up close in live demonstrations. 🖌️

In the afternoon, Lewis Proudfoot, Managing Director of Cliveden Conservation, and members of his team will talk about heritage careers and what employers are looking for. There’s also a career surgery with help on courses, CV preparation and interviews.

See that leaf? It was printed by light. 🍂

It’s a cyanotype: lay a real leaf on special photographic paper, let the light do its work, and you get a deep blue print of every edge and vein. 💙 This Wednesday, you and the kids can make your own.

Pugin, the architect who designed our Cathedral, took his patterns from nature: leaves, flowers and climbing stems run all through his designs. As part of our Restoring Pugin project, experts are uncovering hidden wall designs he created for this building. So for half-term, Emily Arnold and Alex Turner are inviting families into Cathedral Hall to make cyanotypes on paper and fabric, plus autumn leaf prints, using real plants and flowers. 🌿

A bit of history to share while you print: cyanotypes were invented in 1842, just as Pugin’s Cathedral was going up here on Derby Road.

✨ Lauda Sion Salvatorem. Praise, O Sion, your Saviour.

As our Restoring Pugin restoration work draws to a close, the painters have moved into the south ambulatory, the walkway that runs past the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. High above the chapel, letter by letter, they’re bringing back the words that frame this whole side of the Cathedral 🎨

They come from a hymn St Thomas Aquinas wrote for the feast of Corpus Christi, in praise of the Eucharist:

Praise, O Sion, your Saviour, praise your leader and shepherd in hymns and canticles. Dare to praise him as much as you can, for he is beyond all praise.

In a Pugin church nothing is there just for decoration. These words sit over the chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is kept: look up, and the walls tell you exactly where you’re standing 👀

✂️ Most of the lettering is painted through laser-cut stencils, and the letters that appear only once are cut by hand.

🕯️ The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is a place to sit quietly and just be. Come and see the frieze for yourself once the scaffolding comes down.
