Did you know that the word ‘Mwani’ means beach, reflecting their lives as fishermen on the northern coast of Mozambique? Yet despite the slow-paced lifestyle on the seas, their lives are often characterised by fear. Many follow Folk Islam, with protective charms often hidden in their boats or tied around as a necklace on their children. Choosing to follow Jesus can take tremendous courage as they face criticism and rejection by their families and communities.

Pray that more Mwani people would come to know the freedom and peace that comes from trusting in Jesus.

Do you have a heart for creation care? Or practical skills in agriculture, farming or conservation?

With World Environment Day coming up this Friday, join us as we reflect on creation care as an essential part of bringing the good news in all its fullness.

Our mission workers, Barry and Heather, are serving with Growing Nations, an agricultural organisation based in Lesotho, that provides gospel transformation through training in sustainable agriculture. They share some of their encouragements from a recent training event:

“It was great to be able to engage with the 9 participants from Botswana, Lesotho and Zambia. The participants learnt many different things during their time including hands on Farming God’s Way Conservation Agriculture methods, discovery bible studies, transformational development, and how the gospel can be shared through agriculture. We are excited to see how God uses them and the knowledge they have gained in the future”.

If you would like to explore opportunities to use your skills and passions for creation care in global mission, we’d love to hear from you. Watch out for our upcoming edition of Connect magazine as we explore how you can use your skills and passions to serve God.

Why global Missions?
Haven’t the nations come to our doorstep?
Why send someone abroad when there’s so much need here?

These questions reflect the challenge of many churches to balance faithful local ministry with the call to take the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Yet global and local mission are not mutually exclusive. Both are biblical priorities and fundamentally intertwined as the local church becomes the sending hub for global outreach. Global mission is born locally as the church seeks to faithfully care for their own congregation and respond to the immediate needs in their own communities. Without local mission there is no global mission.

But global mission is not an afterthought or a niche ministry for the interested. It’s a God-given responsibility for the whole church. It can be easy to focus on the immediate needs because they surround us every day. But since the beginning, God has been about sending his people beyond their current context and into the wider world. As John Stott said, “We must be global Christians because our God is a global God”. During his own ministry, Jesus moved beyond his hometown of Nazareth to preach in surrounding villages saying, “that is why I came” (Mark 1:38).

Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations is clear, yet the task is incomplete. As we respond to the physical and spiritual needs of our own communities, let’s not forget the many peoples and places in the world that remain without access to the gospel message.

Meet the Islanders! Scattered across the different Indian Ocean Islands, this people group is made up of a blend of ethnic origins. As a result, these islands have a unique blended culture – seen in their music, food and the languages spoken. For those who come from islands where Islam is the main religion, it can be difficult for them to hear about the Good News of Jesus.

Find out more about these people, and the beautiful islands they inhabit in this article from our most recent Connect Junior, as well as ways to pray for them. Check it out here: linktr.ee/aimeurope
