John the Baptist knew who Jesus was. Yet sitting in prison, he sent messengers to ask: ‘Are you the one who is to come?’
Why? Because Jesus wasn’t doing what John expected the Messiah to do. Evil remained. The wicked weren’t being judged. God’s kingdom didn’t seem to be arriving as anticipated.
Jesus answered by pointing John back to the signs of Isaiah: the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, and the good news is preached to the poor. In other words: watch me fulfil the Scriptures.
The day of judgment would come, but first comes the day of grace. First comes the call to repent. First comes God’s patience toward a world that needs mercy.
When we look at our lives and wonder why God hasn’t rescued us from every evil, suffering, or injustice, we remember John’s question—and Jesus’ answer.
God’s justice has not been cancelled. It has been postponed.
