There are so many conflicting voices when it comes to Jesus Christ. It can be overwhelming – and quite discouraging. In John 7, we see that the world can’t think straight about Jesus. But we also see that Jesus has promised to do something about it: to pour out his Spirit like rivers of living water.

To many, a sermon commending the Bible feels familiar and predictable. However, John 6 concludes with something far more profound, challenging our attitude towards Jesus’ words. Peter’s famous response to Jesus stands in sharp contrast to that of the other disciples in this passage and provides a crucial model for us to follow.

What are we hoping to find when we come to Jesus? What should we be presenting to others? It can be so easy to portray Jesus as the one who meets our shopping lists of felt needs, but John 6 shows that he has come to offer something far better. As Jesus describes himself as ‘the bread of life’, we are encouraged to throw away our shopping lists and to come to him for life.
