George Gyte and Revd Mel were on BBC Radio York this morning, talking about our All Saints for All People project and the fantastic news that All Saints’ Church, Helmsley has been awarded over £1.5 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

We talked about what the project will mean for the church, the work that lies ahead and our hopes for its future at the heart of the community.

What a beautiful package to receive - thank you so much. The theme for this year’s annual Christmas Tree Festival is Hearts Full of Love. Two ladies visited the church and had seen our appeal for hearts and sent us this package full of beautiful hearts. These and others will be shared at the festival . There’s lots happening across All Saints’ Church, Helmsley and our wider parish this October, and everyone is very welcome to join us.

Coming up this month we have Harvest Festival at Scawton, our Gift Day and church tours in Helmsley, a Beginners’ Pilgrimage from East Moors, St Chad’s Patronal Festival at Sproxton, and Messy Church with our friends from Rievaulx Methodist Church at Cold Kirby.

On Friday 16 October we’ll be in Helmsley Market Square for our Gift Day. Come and say hello, find out more about the life and work of All Saints’, and discover some of the ways you can be part of what happens here, whether through joining in, volunteering, giving some time or making a donation.

There will also be guided tours of All Saints’ at 11am and 1pm that day, exploring more than a thousand years of history, from our Viking age hogback stone and Norman arches to the wonderful Edwardian wall paintings. Tours last around 35–40 minutes, with a suggested donation of £5 per person.

Alongside all these special events, our regular pattern of worship, prayer and community activities continues throughout the month.

Preparations are gathering pace for this year’s Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints’ Church, Helmsley, from Friday 27 November to Saturday 12 December. Once again, the church will be filled with wonderfully decorated trees, this year celebrating the people, places and things we love. The festival will raise funds for All Saints’ Church, Helmsley and the British Heart Foundation.
There are lots of ways to get involved. Bookings are still open for businesses, organisations, schools, groups and others who would like to decorate a tree, and the booking form is on our website.
You can also book now for our Christmas Wreath Making Workshops on Wednesday 2 December, with morning and afternoon sessions at £35 per person, and for our Quiz & Carols Evening on Friday 4 December. Tickets are £15 per person, including a glass of w**e, cheese, coffee and mince pies, with carols around the piano after the quiz. Tickets for both are available through our website.
And we’re still busy making the hearts that we’ll be giving away to visitors during the festival. Our next Hearts & Crafts afternoon is Tuesday 27 October at 2pm at All Saints’. Whether you knit, crochet, sew or simply fancy coming along and having a go, you’ll be very welcome. There’ll be tea, cake and good company too!

A Service of Wholeness and Healing will be held at Holy Cross, Gilling, on Wednesday 9 September at 7.00pm, led by Revd James Trowsdale.

This will be a quiet and gentle service, offering space for prayer, reflection and healing. Whether you come with something on your own heart, to pray for someone you love, or simply to spend some time in the presence of God, you are very welcome.

Please do share this with anyone who you think might benefit from this service. Revd James would be very glad to see you there.

A big day in Helmsley today as Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain sets off from the Market Place!

There’ll be plenty going on throughout the morning, and it promises to be a great atmosphere in town as we welcome riders, teams and visitors to Helmsley.

All Saints’ will be open, as usual, for anyone who would like to pop in while they’re here.

Everyday Histories at All Saints’ Helmsley – Saturday 12 September

There’s a special day planned at All Saints’ Church, Helmsley on Saturday 12 September, bringing together Yorkshire Churches Day, Heritage Open Days and the Saint Aelred’s Pilgrim Trail.

Throughout the day we’ll be hosting Yorkshire Born & Bred: Farming Life, an exhibition of Valerie Mather’s wonderful photographs capturing the people, families and everyday working lives of Yorkshire’s farming communities.

There will also be a pop-up café in church, with homemade cakes and hot and cold drinks. Come in, enjoy the exhibition, explore our beautiful historic church and stay for a cuppa and cake.

And out on the hills, the Saint Aelred’s Pilgrim Trail Gathering Walk will be making its way from Hawnby to Helmsley, following the everyday landscapes and histories associated with St Aelred.

The pilgrimage begins at All Saints’ Hawnby at 9.30am, with opportunities to join along the way at Murton Grange, Old Byland, Tylas and Rievaulx, before arriving in Helmsley.

The whole day comes together at 4pm at All Saints’ Helmsley, when pilgrims, visitors and friends are invited to join us for the closing service of the Gathering Walk.

Whether you come for the photographs, the church, the cake, the walking – or all four – you’ll be very welcome.

Hearts and Crafts – come and join us!

Our next Hearts and Crafts afternoon is this Tuesday 25 August at 2pm at All Saints’ Church, Helmsley.

We’re busy knitting, crocheting, sewing and crafting hearts for this year’s Hearts Full of Love Christmas Tree Festival. We’ve loved seeing our crafting groups taking shape this year – and some familiar faces who helped make more than 1,400 Angels of Hope last year are back crafting with us again!

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re an experienced crafter or just fancy having a go. There’ll be tea, cake, conversation, patterns and plenty of encouragement. We also have some wool and stuffing available.

Can’t make Tuesday? You can still join in from home. We’re sharing some of our heart patterns here, so choose one, get crafting and return your finished hearts to us for the Festival. The hearts will be given away to visitors, spreading a little love far beyond Helmsley.
