St. Catherine of Genoa Novena
St. Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510) endured ten unhappy years in an arranged marriage to an unfaithful husband who squandered their fortune, until on a March day in 1473, kneeling for confession, she was struck by the pure love of God and never turned back. She gave the rest of her life to the incurables of the Pammatone hospital, stayed at her post through two plagues, won her husband back to God, and set down in her Treatise on Purgatory the teaching that has shaped the Church’s understanding of that cleansing fire ever since. Pray this novena for difficult and childless marriages, for wives who have been betrayed, for the sick and those who nurse them, for the favor you most need.

Amen.

O glorious Saint Catherine of Genoa, in one moment, kneeling to confess your sins, you were wounded by the pure love of God, and you rose from that place able to say only, “No more world, no more sin.” You had known ten years of a marriage that brought you sorrow, betrayal, and loneliness, and God did not take that cross from you, but he gave you5 himself in the midst of it, and made of you a fountain of charity for a whole city.

You did not flee to a cloister but stayed in the world and served it, seeking out the sick whom others would not touch, nursing the incurable at Pammatone with your own hands, and standing at your post through the plague when Genoa emptied around you. You bore with your husband, prayed for him, and lived to see him give himself to God, and you tended him to the end.

Obtain for us, we beg you, some spark of that pure love which asks nothing for itself. Comfort all who are unhappy in their marriages, all wives and husbands wounded by unfaithfulness, all who long for children and have none, and all who carry a sorrow at home that the world never sees. Teach them, as you were taught, that God is not absent from such a cross but hidden within it.

Watch over the sick and all who care for them, over nurses and doctors and those who labor in hospitals, and over every soul dying without comfort. And you who saw so clearly that the fire of Purgatory is the very fire of God’s love making a soul ready to look upon him, pray for the holy souls, and pray that we may let that love burn away in us now whatever would keep us from him hereafter.

And now, dear Saint Catherine, we place in your hands the particular favor we ask through your intercession.

You were chosen by the most Adorable Trinity from all eternity to be the most pure Mother of Jesus.

Permit me, your humble and devoted client, to remind you of the joy you received at the instance of the most Sacred Incarnation of our Divine Lord and during the nine months you carried Him in your chaste womb.

I wish most sincerely that I could renew, or even increase, that joy by the fervor of my prayers.

Lord, for love of you St. Peter Claver became the faithful servant of slaves. Through his prayer help us to see the true dignity of the human family, all children of one father, and to spend ourselves for their salvation. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

Amen.

Dear faithful saint, you were permeated with compassion for the oppressed, for human beings sold as slaves. While alleviating their natural ills, you also took away their spiritual ills, and taught them the surpassing knowledge of Christ. Inspire many of our contemporaries to become self-sacrificing missionaries like you.

And now, dear Saint Peter Claver, we place in your hands the particular favor we ask through your intercession.

Hail, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, my Mother Mary, hail! At your feet I humbly kneel to offer you a crown of roses - bright yellow roses to remind you of the public ministry of your son - each rose recalling a holy mystery; each ten bound together with my petition for a particular grace.

O Holy Queen, dispenser of God’s graces and Mother of all who invoke you! You cannot look upon my gift and fail to see its binding. As you receive my gift, so will you receive my petition; from your bounty you will give me the favor I so earnestly and trustingly seek. I despair of nothing that I ask of you. Show yourself my Mother!

Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, really present in the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, since I cannot now receive you in the form of bread and w**e, I ask with a heart full of love and longing that you come spiritually into my soul through the intercession of your most holy Mother. Abide with me forever: you in me, and I in you, in time and in eternity, in Mary.

Prayer during 27 days of petition:
Sweet Mother Mary, I offer you this Spiritual Communion to bind my bouquets in a wreath to place upon your brow. O my Mother! Look with favor upon my gift, and in your love obtain for me (specify request).

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has purchased for us the reward of eternal life, grant we beseech you, that meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ, our Lord.
