Refugee protection is a human right

As the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention is observed this week, Ruzigama Mwamba from the Democratic Republic of Congo, living in Burundi, reflected on the rights of people like him, who have been forcibly displaced.

Refugees, he says, have the right to be supported properly, and the right to a good life, just “like any other human being who is not a refugee.”

Refugee protection for a young South Sudanese

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Refugee Convention. For Nyaruach Gatluak Chol, a young South Sudanese film maker living at the Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya, refugee protection means being able to go to school, make friends, dream and have plans about the future, “and grow in into my area of focus.”

In Kakuma, LWF supports refugees by providing protection, education, youth engagement, water, sanitation, peacebuilding, and livelihoods.

Uganda: Restoring choice and dignity

With a new EUR 4 million EU grant, LWF Uganda is focused on ensuring that individuals and refugee families living in vulnerable situations meet their daily needs without having to make impossible choices.

“This support will ensure vulnerable households strengthen their resilience to cope with ongoing economic and social challenges,” said Adriana Franco Chitanana, LWF Uganda Representative.

One month ago Venezuela was struck by two consecutive earthquakes, resulting in nearly 5,400 deaths and almost 18,000 people losing their homes.

Today the LWF honours all those affected by the disaster and who have worked tirelessly to provide aid and support.

The emergency is not over today, and that is why we invite you to keep walking with us: keep giving, keep supporting, keep praying for Venezuela and for every family still working to rebuild their lives.
