There will be a Celebration of Life for Joan Hill on Saturday May 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. We hope all her friends are able to join her family in this remembrance. Her son Warren Hill and his daughter Olivia Rox will be performing at the service. There will be a reception afterwards in the Auditorium.

Our lilac bush is in full bloom this week. The fragrance is heavenly. It is a shame they only last for a short time.

Earlier this week we had a visit from what we believe was a Cooper's Hawk. It unsuccessfully chased a squirrel and then was repeatedly dive-bombed by a very loud and unhappy crow.

We are a welcoming and inclusive church family and I am sorry I didn't get a chance to extend an invitation to our visitor. Perhaps this was an aquaintance of our new minister, dropping by to share best wishes. If so, we hope it returns.

Our sale was a massive success. We had over 300 people lined up to get in. We thank everyone who attended. We especially want to thank our volunteers (70+) who put in so many hours to set up, sell, and clean up. We hope to see you all again on October 16th and 17th.

This Sunday, May 3, we are welcoming our new minister. We invite everyone to join us for this service.

Christopher Hawke felt the spirit of the times move as he watched the Berlin Wall come down as a young backpacker. Standing at the edge of history, he decided to become a journalist.

He worked in Japan, then transferred to New York, where he stood at the smouldering ruins of the World Trade Center, and made sandwiches for the firefighters at the scene.

After attending the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, he joined the Associated Press editing hub and worked in Kabul and Islamabad. He moved to Beijing, where he learned Mandarin, taught journalism, and worked as an editor. He also spent several years leading square dances and singing hymns, murder ballads and songs about barnyard animals across China, including on national TV and in its most prestigious concert halls. He met his wife Xin, and together they renovated an ancient courtyard home in the mountains of West China, overlooking a lake.

He and Xin returned to Canada in 2021 for the birth of their daughter Cora, and he enrolled at Emmanuel College, University of Toronto, graduating in 2026 with a focus on the Hebrew Bible and Jewish roots of Christianity.

Chris honours and nurtures each person’s spiritual journey without imposing doctrine or metaphysical certainty, trusting that transformation happens through presence and lived experience, not persuasion or easy formulas.

Tomorrow (April 28) is the last day for donations to our sale. We thank everyone for their ongoing support.
