One of the greatest threats to the Church has always been adding human requirements to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul rebuked those who insisted that believers must be circumcised to be accepted by God. Though circumcision was once commanded under the Old Covenant, to make it necessary after the coming of Christ was to deny the sufficiency of His finished work. The same principle applies to dietary laws. Whenever human works are added to the gospel, Christians are placed back under a yoke of slavery.
