WE’RE HIRING – CEMETERY SUPERINTENDENT

The Elmwood Cemetery in Moncton is looking for a dedicated and professional Superintendent to join our team.

This important leadership role is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, administration, and respectful care of the cemetery grounds and services. We’re seeking someone who is organized, compassionate, community-minded, and experienced in operations or facility management.

Location: Moncton, NB
Full-time Position

Responsibilities include:
• Supervising cemetery operations and grounds maintenance
• Coordinating burials and cemetery services
• Managing staff, contractors, and equipment
• Assisting families and visitors with professionalism and care
• Maintaining records and ensuring regulatory compliance
• Operating zero-turn lawn mowers and tractors

Qualifications:
- Leadership and organizational experience
- Strong communication and customer skills
- Experience in maintenance, operations, or property management is an asset
- Respectful, compassionate, and detail-oriented approach

It has been almost a week since the vandalism incident occurred at our beautiful cemetery. When we came in last Friday morning, we were devastated to find that we had around 40 headstones down. Some had been standing for over 150 years. Our crew has been hard at work all week, and many of these have been put up. They will continue to put up as many as they can. For some of the larger stones, we will need assistance from a monument company; however, it is a very busy time of year for monument companies to finish any orders they have at the end of their season, and they may not be able to do this until the middle of November.

We at Elmwood Cemetery will do everything we can to fix any monuments that are still down before the snow falls. Our official closing date of the year is October 31, 2025, and we reopen the first full week in May.

We would also like to take this time to thank the outpouring of generosity and well-wishes from the Greater Moncton Community, as well as many people we have heard from across Canada. As a not-for-profit organization, we do everything we can to keep our cemetery well-kept, and your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions regarding this or anything else at the cemetery, please feel free to give us a call Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, at (506) 856-6990 until we close officially on October 31st. Once we close, we will still be checking emails at least a couple of times a week at [email protected] , or you can call and leave a message at the phone number above. We usually try and answer voice mails once a week during our off-season.

If you have family members or friends who are interred (buried) with us, and there is a headstone on their lot, we have uploaded all of the headstones onto a website called BillionGraves. The address is just www.billiongraves.com . Once you go there, you can bring up the lot in question, and it will even show you an approximate location of where it is on the map.

We've had many people visiting us this week, both from in the city and out of the city, looking for their relatives who are buried with us.

If you are looking to find out where your relatives are buried with us, feel free to stop in any time during the week from 8 AM and 4 PM, and we can provide you with any information we have on them as well as a map to guide you to where they are. If you are uncertain of the maps, our employees are happy to help you find them on the map as well.

Things are pretty dry outside, but our workers are still here, levelling stones each day, until it becomes too warm to work in the extreme heat. Burials are still taking place upon request.

Our office is still open daily, Monday to Friday, if you need anything. Some of the things we do here in the office are helping people to find their relatives in our graveyard, since it is so large, setting up work orders for families to clean, paint, and level headstones, and selling lots and columbarium niches for future burial, as well as processing prepaid burials. Please note that there have been some updates to the number of urns permitted on double and single lots since last year. We've attached our updated price list and descriptions for reference. For further details, please visit our website, email us at [email protected], or call our office Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting from our seasonal reopening on May 5th, 2025. In the interim, we will be checking our voicemails regularly throughout the winter, so feel free to leave us a message!

The Elmwood Cemetery workers have been working hard in trying to fill in sunken graves over the past week. Rest assured that these spots will/have been seeded to get the beautiful grass back at full force!
