Is belief only about heaven?

CAN SOMEONE ACTUALLY BECOME A NEW PERSON?

It's possible to believe in Jesus the wrong way. Nicodemus, a highly respected religious leader, believed in the signs Jesus performed, and still Jesus didn't believe in Nicodemus's belief.

Saving belief means placing our full trust in Jesus as our King and following Him in every area of our lives. Agreeing that certain events happened can't save us on its own.

We must be transformed by God's Spirit and made new. That's what Jesus told Nicodemus when they talked about what it takes to be saved.

Someone told me this week that people from their life before Jesus kept encouraging them to try the old things again. Their answer: "I'm different now. I don't do that anymore. That's who I was. It's not who I am. I'm a new person."

While I was leading Alpha, a course for people exploring faith, one man got so angry that I thought he might actually hit me for telling him about Jesus. A woman in that group had recently come to faith.

Over time, he became a friend. A couple of months later, he stopped me and said, "I don't know what I think about this thing you teach and believe, but I can't deny that she's different. Whatever is accomplishing that, thank you."

Yes, a person can actually become new. Jesus saves us in a way that transforms who we are, and the change is real enough that even a skeptic can see it.

Sometimes we do a disservice to the gospel, the good news about Jesus, by only talking about what He saves us from, and not about what He saves us for.

The cost of salvation is free for you because Jesus died for you, but the cost of salvation is actually incalculably high because it cost God his Son.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR FAITH IS ACTUALLY GROWING

The evidence of growing faith shows up in how you treat people. If you want to measure how you're doing as a Christian, measure the fruit. Take a look at the fruit in your life.

That fruit is the character of Christ being formed in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Sometimes this is a very slow progression, so it can be hard to see on your own. You may need someone close to you to help you take an honest look.

Hold this question up like a mirror: are you the same person now that you were when you first became a Christian?

Growing faith looks like working up the line. Every one of us is imperfect, but we can keep moving forward and developing a relationship with God.
