Theme: THE SALT OF THE EARTH
Text: Matthew 5:13

Key Points:

Matthew 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

WHAT WAS THE USE OF SALT?

1. Salt was of great value in ancient world. It was used to pay the wages of the Roman soldiers. In our day, salt is frowned upon because it raised blood pressure.

2. Salt was used for seasoning and giving flavor to food. (Job 6:6 “Can something tasteless be eaten without salt?”)

3. Salt was used to purify water and sacrifices

4. Salt was used as a fertilizer for the land. It helped the root system to absorb water

5. Salt was used as a preservative. It served as the refrigerator that prevented decay

6. Salt was used to flavor and seasoning for food

7. Salt was placed on the soil on top of the roof to harden the soil and prevent leaks

HOW DO WE BECOME THE SALT OF THE EARTH?

1. By our presence
2. By active involvement
3. By our lifestyle
4. By our influence

Remember that the effectiveness of salt is conditioned by the ability of the salt to keep its saltiness. Even though chemically salt could not lose its saltiness because of the sodium chloride that is resistant to breakdown, the salt in Palestine was often mixed with other chemicals that diluted it.

Text: Matthew 5:10-12

Matthew 5:10-12

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

WHY IS PERSECUTION/SUFFERING IMPORTANT FOR THE BELIEVER?

1. Persecution plays an essential role in our sanctification. 1 Peter 4:12 states “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

2. Suffering intensifies the joy of our glorification (1 Peter 4:13)

3. God gives special anointing to those who suffer for Christ sake (1 Peter 4:14)
If you want to avoid persecution in this world, mimic the world’s standard; never criticize its values; keep quiet about the gospel; smile and keep silent when God’s name is mocked and reviled; be ashamed of Jesus.
Jesus states in the passage that persecution is primarily because of two reasons: i) For righteousness’ sake (v10) and on account of Jesus (v11)

WHAT SHOULD BE OUR RESPONSE WHEN WE ARE PERSECUTED?

Rejoice and be glad! We are not to retaliate like an unbeliever would; we are not to like the wounds of self-pity nor sulk like a child or pretend as though pain feels good. We must rather rejoice and be exceedingly glad.

HOW CAN WE REJOICE IN SUFFERING?

1. Think about how minimal our suffering is compared with the agonies of hell

2. Remember that those who don’t know Christ will persecute those who know Him (John 15:21)

3. Remember that the apostles were beaten because they believed in Jesus (Acts 5:40-42)

4. Because suffering produces endurance, character and hope (Romans 5:3-5)

5. As children of God, we must suffer with Him to be glorified with Him (Romans 8:16-17)

6. There is promised reward for those who suffer for Christ (Matthew 5:12)
