Welkom in België! 🇧🇪❤️

We are happy to announce that our very own Thato and Atty have arrived safely in Belgium!

After travelling through the night, they have finally made it safely to their destination. We thank God for His protection throughout their journey.

As they now prepare to take part in Krinkel Camp 2026, we wish them an incredible and memorable camp! May they have fun, make new friends, learn, grow in faith, experience the beauty of fellowship and make memories that they will carry with them for years to come.

Go and represent Chiro Botswana with pride! Enjoy every moment! We can’t wait to hear all about your experience.

Tonight, our very own Thato and Atty begin their journey to represent Chiro Botswana at Krinkel Camp 2026 in Merksplas, Belgium. 🇧🇪🌍

They will be departing tonight and travelling through the night as they begin this incredible journey.

As they travel, we kindly ask you all to keep them in your prayers. Pray for safe travels, protection, good health, smooth connections and a successful journey from departure to arrival.

May God guide them every step of the way and bring them safely to Belgium. May they carry the spirit of Chiro Botswana with pride and return home with beautiful memories and experiences.

A SHEPHERD CALLED TO FRANCISTOWN

From Ramotswa soil, on March twelfth day, year 1976
God planted a seed that would not decay:
Rev. Fr. Lawrence Ofentse Pheto, humble and true - led by a calling only few persue.

In 2005, at St. Conrad's altar you stood
Priest of Gaborone, serving as you should through Lobatse, Tlokweng, Mmankgodi's door - you broke the bread and walked with the poor - you taught the young at Charles Lwanga's hall - you heard the broken in tribunal's call - twenty years of faith,of patient grace, preparing you for this sacred place

On April Tenth, a voice from Rome was clear - "Francistown awaits,and pope Leo draws near" not for honor but for service you came,to the shepherd God's flock in his holy name - and now this day,the twenty - seventh of June, the church lifts her song, a joyful tune,hands will be laid, the spirit will descend: A priest becomes a bishop, sent to defend .

So rise, Bishop-Elect, in humility and fire,
Lead Francistown higher,lift hearts higher,
May Christ the cornerstone be your light and may the Church you serve walk in his sight.

Crowned not with gold,but with love and care, a shepherd for all, in every prayer!!

Today, with faith and gratitude, we bid farewell to our beloved Chiro Legend , who has completed the journey of earthly life and entered into the eternal embrace of our Lord.

We thank God for the gift of his life, his unwavering faith, dedicated service, and the love he shared with the Chiro family and the wider Church. His legacy of commitment, humility, and devotion will continue to inspire generations to come.

As we mourn his passing, we take comfort in God’s promise of eternal life:

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” — John 11:25

May the angels lead him into paradise, may the saints welcome him into the heavenly kingdom, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

It is with deep sadness that we join the parish communities of St. Gabriel and St. Bakhita in mourning the passing of our beloved brother, Monkgomotsi, affectionately known to many of us as “Monkgo” or “Monkgogi.”

Monkgo was a true Chiro legend whose presence was felt across generations of Chiro members. For many years, he faithfully attended Chiro camps and gatherings becoming a familiar face, a friend and a source of joy to countless young people. His dedication, commitment, and love for the Chiro Youth Movement left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As Chiro Diocese of Francistown, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the parish communities of St. Gabriel and St. Bakhita during this difficult time. We thank God for the gift of his life, his service and the many memories he leaves behind.

NEW BISHOP OF FRANCISTOWN

Pope Leo XIV has appointed the Reverend Father Lawrence Ofentse Pheto, a priest of Gaborone Diocese, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Francistown, making Monsignor (Mons) Pheto the third bishop of the local Church in the second largest city in Botswana.

The announcement was made public on Friday, 10 April 2026, by the Apostolic Nuncio to Southern Africa, Archbishop Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński. Until the time of this appointment, Francistown Diocese had been vacant and under the pastoral care of Father Gabriel Lionel Afagbegee SVD, who served as Apostolic Administrator following the passing of Bishop Anthony Pascal Rebello SVD in May 2024.

BACKGROUND OF MONSIGNOR LAWRENCE PHETO

Born on 12 March 1976 in Ramotswa, Botswana, Bishop-elect Lawrence Ofentse Pheto was ordained a priest on 8 October 2005 by Bishop Boniface Tshosa Setlalekgosi at St Conrad’s Catholic Mission in Ramotswa.
From 1998 to 2005, Mons Pheto pursued his philosophical and theological formation in Zimbabwe, completing a Diploma in Philosophy at St Augustine Major Seminary in Bulawayo (1998–2000) and a Diploma in Theology at Chishawasha Regional Major Seminary in Harare (2001–2005). Seeking to deepen his service to the Church, he later obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Urbaniana University between 2009 and 2012.
Over the course of his priestly ministry, Mons Pheto has served in various pastoral and leadership roles within the Diocese of Gaborone. These include parish ministry in Mmankgodi and Tlokweng, as well as service in priestly formation as Rector of the Minor Seminary and Pre-Major Seminary and as Vocation Director.
The 50-year-old Monsignor has also contributed to the Church’s judicial ministry as Judicial Vicar at the Diocesan Tribunal in Gaborone, Botswana, since 2013. Since February 2017, he has served as the Parish Priest of St Theresa Parish in Lobatse, where he has accompanied families, promoted youth ministry, and strengthened parish life.
According to 2023 statistics, the Diocese of Francistown, which falls under the Metropolitan jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Pretoria, serves approximately 31,100 Catholics, spread across vast rural and urban communities. The appointment of Bishop-elect Pheto represents a new chapter of pastoral leadership and missionary commitment for the Church in Botswana.
