Work is changing quickly. AI, competition and uncertainty are reshaping not only our careers, but also how we think about success and security.

Amid all this change, it may be worth asking:

In ๐„๐ฉ๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ž ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ‘ of The Restful Mind Podcast, Gyalwa Dokhampa takes us through some of the most pressing anxieties surrounding work and career today โ€” from feeling unseen despite giving our best, to competition, AI, financial security, ambition and our constant need for recognition.

At the heart of the conversation is a simple but increasingly important reminder: A restful mind does not give us control over an uncertain world. But it gives us space to see change more clearly, reflect on what we are chasing, and decide what is truly worth our effort.

โ–ช๏ธWho actually decides what โ€œsuccessโ€ โ€” or โ€œenoughโ€ โ€” looks like?

During the Tara teaching in London on 5 September, organised by Drukpa UK, Gyalwa Dokhampa shared how Tara practice can become a practical way of working with our emotions and cultivating a healthier, more balanced mind.

To illustrate this, Gyalwa Dokhampa shared a story.

Many of our beliefs and values are shaped by our own concepts. As The Gyalwang Drukpa often teaches, our concepts are like a mirror, and our experiences are like reflections in that mirror.

From a spiritual point of view, we can also understand the health of our mind by looking at how we relate to our emotions.

An incident may have happened fifteen years ago and lasted only ten minutes, yet we can continue carrying the anger and resentment for years. We replay those ten minutes again and again in our mind, repeatedly experiencing the same hurt. The incident happened only once, but in our mind, we may allow it to happen thousands of times.

When anger, hatred or resentment reaches a point where it continually disturbs our inner peace and affects the way we experience life, it becomes important to recognise and work with it.

This is where

Tara practice is not separate from our emotions and daily experiences. Through awareness and mindfulness, we learn to recognise our anger, fear, attachment, jealousy and resentment rather than simply being carried away by them.

Spiritual practice does not mean that difficult emotions will never arise. Rather, through practice, we gradually learn how to relate to them differentlyโ€”without allowing them to dominate our mind or remain in our heart for years.

In this way, Tara practice becomes not only a prayer or meditation, but a practical path of transforming our mindโ€”cultivating greater awareness, compassion, wisdom and inner freedom.

There are many podcasts that explore our emotions, relationships, fears, ambitions and the pressures of modern life. And there are Dharma teachings that guide us deeply into Buddhist philosophy and practice.

A question about fear becomes an exploration of impermanence. โ–ช๏ธA conversation about marriage reveals how easily we fall in love with our own idea of another person. โ–ช๏ธConfidence leads unexpectedly to the wisdom of equanimity. โ–ช๏ธEven social media algorithms become a way of looking at how our existing concepts are continually reinforced.

๐ŸŒฟ And then the conversation goes further.

Why do we visualize Tara in Vajrayana practice? โ–ช๏ธWhy repeat a mantra hundreds of thousands of times? โ–ช๏ธWhy offer seven bowls of water to a Buddha who needs nothing from us?

Behind practices that can sometimes appear mysterious is a remarkably precise understanding of the mind โ€” and a path for moving from knowing something intellectually to embodying it in how we see, respond to, and live our lives.

That makes this conversation worthwhile whether you have practised for years or are simply curious about where Buddhist wisdom might lead when taken beyond ideas.

๐ŸŒฟ A few questions youโ€™ll want to stay with:

โ–ช๏ธWhat if fear comes not from change itself, but from our difficulty in accepting that things will change?
โ–ช๏ธHow much of our suffering comes from being trapped in our own definitions?
โ–ช๏ธWhat would confidence look like if it were no longer based on being better than someone else?
โ–ช๏ธWhy does Vajrayana work with visualization rather than intellect alone?
โ–ช๏ธWhat is the deeper meaning of mantra, visualization and offering?
โ–ช๏ธAnd ultimately: how does wisdom become something we actually live?

It is a long conversation, and perhaps that is part of its value. You do not have to take everything from it at once.

Gyalwa Dokhampa said during todayโ€™s Tara teaching that ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฟโ€”๐—ฎ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ๐˜€ ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€.

Every time we practise Tara, we are working with our own emotions.

When we make offerings in the Vajrayana tradition, โ€”flowers, fruits, milk and other beautiful thingsโ€”we are not simply offering them to Tara. The act of offering helps us loosen our attachments: to our senses, our habitual ways of living, and the concepts we hold onto.

And when we practise purification, we recognise our faults and mistakes, understanding that some of our actions have come from ignorance. At the same time, we remind ourselves that we can come out of our mistakes, change, and transform.

In this way, Tara practice becomes a form of mindfulnessโ€”a more interactive mindfulness practiceโ€”helping us look within, recognise our emotions and attachments, and gently work with them.

Today, Drukpa Australia united in prayer and offered butter lamps for all those affected by the devastating floods in Nepal and China.

May light guide them through the darkness. May they find strength in their communities, and may safety and hope return to all affected.

โ€œEven if you donate a small amount, if it is offered with a pure and generous heart, the merit is vast and lasting. But if you give unwillingly, with hesitation, or without the true intention to help, then both the money and the merit are lost. The key is not the size of the offering, but the sincerity behind it. โ€œ - Gyalwa Dokhampa
