Reading: Mark 11:1-10

Main Idea:
There are a lot of things in life that can get between us and God—habits, work, goals, lifestyle, sin… even religion itself. And they don’t just make life fuller or harder; they choke off fruit. They keep us from the very thing we were made for: a living, life-giving relationship with God. In Mark 11, we’re brought into the final week before the crucifixion.

And what we see is not accidental: Jesus enters
Jerusalem as King. Deliberately. Intentionally. Publicly. We see him fulfilling prophecy. Inspecting the temple. Cursing a fig tree. Clearing out the temple courts. But none of this is random.

Through it all, Jesus is revealing himself as the true Messiah-King, and he’s on a mission to remove every barrier that stands between God and his people. He has come to judge what is empty and restore what is real. He wants to tear down what blocks the way and reopen access to the Father. He's here to call his people back into true, fruitful relationship with God.

Main Idea:
Before Jesus enters Jerusalem to begin his journey to the Cross, he’s not quite finished talking about our heart.

He meets the rich young man, who’s a stark picture of the lost world; desperately in need of Jesus but has a heart that’s hard & blind to him, where Jesus lays down the truth. Only with me can you know eternal life, only God can overcome the impossible of our sin & save us, only Jesus can enter us into the Kingdom of God, only a heart surrendered in faith, only a life lived in grace-based devotion can know life now & eternally. Where, as Jesus enters Jericho, this kind of surrender was seen in how the blind man Bartimaeus responds to him.

In these moments though; with the rich man’s struggle to think beyond this world, with Bartimaeus stopping at nothing to be with Jesus, & with the disciples misunderstanding what Jesus meant by his death & resurrection – where posed that much deeper question that just who we’re looking to, who we’re following, or even what our heart loves most – to that question of whether we truly believe in who Jesus actually is & if that’s how we’re prepared to live.

Reading: Mark 9:33-10:16
Main Idea:
This section of Mark's gospel is an uncomfortable one. We sit through an awkward interaction in which Jesus exposes his disciples' pride and self-centeredness, followed by a rather harrowing teaching on sin and hell. As if that weren't enough, now the pharisees challenge Jesus on the emotionally charged issue of divorce, only for Jesus to turn around and challenge them for their hardness of heart. This hard-heartedness is not just a problem for the pharisees, but even the disciples. And Jesus shows us that we're in the same boat too.

As disheartening as this may be to hear, there is good news as well. Jesus hasn't left us to our own devices. God had long foretold of a day when he would renew the hearts of people, turning them from hearts of stone into hearts of flesh, hearts that are governed by loving and humble service, rather than self-centeredness and pride.

Jesus points out how broken and calloused our hearts are, not in order to condemn us, but in order that we might recognise our need for a saviour. He invites us to come to him just as we are, that he might bless us and renew us.
