Main Idea:
The story of Jephthah in Judges shows us what can happen when our relationship with God shifts from trust to transaction. Under pressure, it’s tempting to take control—to bargain with God, make promises, to try tip the scales in our favour. To put our will before His will. We see this pattern throughout Judges: God’s people turn away from Him, experience the consequences, cry out to God, and then, even after He rescues them, the cycle begins again. Jephthah is another example of this downward spiral. He begins by recognising that victory belongs to God, but as the pressure increases, his focus shifts. Instead of simply trusting God and submitting to His will, he tries to secure the outcome, and that is perhaps the uncomfortable lesson for us. We can do exactly the same thing.
When life gets difficult, when we're afraid of what might happen, when we're suffering, or when we desperately want a particular outcome, our instinct can be to negotiate with God rather than trust Him. We can pray, “God, if you do this, then I'll do that.” We can become so focused on getting the outcome we want that we lose sight of God Himself. Judges keeps exposing the same problem. We are flawed, prone to wander, trying to save ourselves on our own terms. Eventually, like Israel, we are left with nowhere else to turn but to cry out for something better.

Main Idea:
We all make a lot of choices every day. Some are good; others are choices we’d make differently if we had the chance. And many of them happen without us even really thinking about them. But every choice takes us somewhere. Our choices shape the direction of our lives and reveal what and who we're living for. Every day, we make choices about what will rule our lives. We choose what we trust, what we pursue, what we value, and ultimately, who gets the throne.
And this is what Judges 9 helps us wrestle with. Because the question underneath the entire chapter is:
Who gets to be king, and what happens when we choose the wrong one?
Judges 9 presents the rise and fall of Abimelech, Gideon’s son. While Gideon refused kingship with his lips, Abimelech reaches for it with both hands. But his rise to the throne comes through murder, betrayal, fear, chaos, and destruction. And so, in this chapter, we see what happens when God’s people turn their backs on him and choose the wrong king. But it's not simply a story about a bad king making bad choices. It is a story about what happens when ordinary people make bad choices about who they will follow. Bad choices produce bad fruit.Throughout the chapter's darkness, however, we're left longing for something better: the good rule and reign of the good King. The King whose reign does not produce chaos and death, but righteousness, peace, and life.
