🌱 SPRING IS HERE — SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH IT? 🌱

Spring is now upon us, and depending on who you listen to, the outlook for the season ahead couldn’t be more conflicting.

☀️ We’re hearing talk of a “Super El Niño” and the potential for a hot, dry period.

🌧️ At the same time, other long-range forecasters are talking about the possibility of Australia’s flooding rains returning.

Who will be right?

The reality is, we don’t know yet.

But what we do know is that across the east coast of northern Australia, a large percentage of our annual rainfall falls during a relatively short summer growing period.

And every year, we get one opportunity to make the most of it.

So rather than trying to pick the forecast, maybe the better questions are:

👉 If it does rain, are you ready to take advantage of it?

👉 Are your paddocks ready to respond?

👉 Are there soil fertility constraints holding back production?

👉 Are there pastures that need renovating or establishing?

👉 Do you have paddocks that could be strategically spelled?

👉 Could you grow and conserve forage while conditions are favourable?

👉 Could this summer be used to build a feed reserve rather than simply grow more grass?

Because we’re not just making decisions for this growing season.

We’re potentially setting the business up for the next 12 months… the next two years… and whatever comes after that.

One thing Australian agriculture has taught us repeatedly is that another dry spell will come. We just don’t know exactly when.

The best time to prepare for the next dry period isn’t when the dams are empty, the grass has disappeared and everyone is chasing feed.

It’s when you’ve got moisture, grass and options.

So heading into this summer, perhaps the question isn’t:

“What is the season going to do?”

Perhaps it’s:

🌱 **When did you last check the engine light on your soils?**

There is a saying in agriculture:

**What you don’t measure, you cannot change.**

Whether it is carcass grading, weight gains, pregnancy rates, grazing days per 100 mm of rainfall, pasture growth—or soil composition—we need reliable measurements before we can make better decisions.

Our soils, and the nutrients and biology they contain, are among the greatest assets in any grazing operation. Yet they are often the asset we understand the least.

All too often, I am asked to “fix” a pasture problem that hasn’t appeared overnight. It has been slowly developing over years—sometimes decades—through declining fertility, nutrient imbalances, reduced groundcover or changing soil condition.

But somehow, I am still expected to wave a magic wand and solve it overnight.

Unfortunately, years of decline and degradation are rarely corrected in one move—even with an open chequebook.

A soil test won’t provide every answer, but it gives us a starting point. It helps identify what is having the greatest impact, what needs to be prioritised and, importantly, how we might address it cost-effectively over time.

So, as I continue going slightly stir-crazy staring at soil-test numbers, ask yourself:

🌱 FRIDAY THOUGHT PROVOKER… WHAT IF WE’VE GOT GRT SEED PERSISTENCE BACKWARDS?

For the past few weeks we’ve talked about seed quality, germination, vigour and storage.

We know heat + humidity + moisture can be brutal on pasture seed.

Yet we’re told Giant Rat’s Tail Grass seed can remain viable in the soil for years.

So here’s the question that’s been rattling around in my head…

What if we could make GRT seed die FASTER simply by growing more grass?

Think about it.

Take a GRT seed sitting on bare soil.

☀️ Sun
🌬️ Air movement
🔥 Heat
💧 Wet after rain — then dries again.

Now put that exact same seed underneath a thick, matted pasture base.

Different world.

More moisture held at the soil surface.
Higher humidity.
Less air movement.
More biological activity.
Different temperature fluctuations.
Repeated wetting and drying.

What happens to that seed?

Does it survive longer?

Or could that warm, moist microclimate actually accelerate deterioration and loss of viability?

And here’s the second part…

If those conditions trigger the GRT seed to germinate, it then has to punch through a dense pasture mat and compete against established plants for light, moisture and nutrients.

So instead of just thinking about pasture competition as a way of stopping GRT plants…

Could we actually be using pasture management to attack the SEED BANK?

Grow grass.
Create biomass.
Lay it down.
Cover the soil.
Encourage germination.
Prevent establishment.

And potentially accelerate seed deterioration at the same time.

We talk a lot about killing GRT plants.

Maybe we should be talking a hell of a lot more about how we kill the next generation before it ever becomes a plant.

I don’t know the answer.

But I reckon it’s a bloody good question.

🌱 WHEN DID HIGH QUALITY SEED BECOME SUSPICIOUS?

Earlier this week I posted about several lines of tropical pasture seed being cleaned to 100% purity.

The responses were fascinating.

Some thought it was an exceptional result. Others were immediately suspicious. And some raised another very valid question — are we over-cleaning seed and potentially throwing good seed away, reducing the return to the grower?

That got me thinking…

Is 100% purity suspicious because it shouldn’t be achievable — or because we’re simply not accustomed to seeing it in tropical pasture seed?

In vegetable seed, hybrid seed and many temperate seed markets, very high purity isn’t unusual — in many cases, it’s effectively a necessity.

Yes, tropical pasture grasses can be bloody difficult seeds to clean.

But it’s 2026.

Harvesting has improved. Cleaning and grading technology has improved. Seed testing has improved.

Shouldn’t our expectations improve as well?

And here’s another way of looking at it.

Imagine you have two options:

Option A:
1,000 kg of seed
85% purity
$25/kg
Cost = $25,000
Actual pure seed = 850 kg

Option B:
850 kg of seed
100% purity
$30/kg
Cost = $25,500
Actual pure seed = 850 kg

Assuming equivalent germination, both purchases contain exactly the same amount of pure seed.

One costs $500 more — just 2% — but you’re purchasing, transporting, handling and spreading 150 kg less material that isn’t the seed you’re actually trying to establish.

So which would you buy?

And perhaps more importantly, would you still describe the $30/kg seed as “more expensive”?

This is why I think our industry needs to get beyond simply comparing $/kg on the bag.

If seed is ultimately about establishing viable plants, shouldn’t we be comparing what we’re actually buying — purity, germination and ultimately $/kg of Pure Live Seed?

Higher purity doesn’t automatically mean higher germination, and there absolutely has to be an economic balance between cleaning efficiency and the recovery of good seed for the grower.

But equally, just because we’ve accepted certain quality results in tropical pasture seed for the past 50 years doesn’t mean they should define what we accept for the next 50.

So I’m interested:

Are we suspicious of exceptional quality simply because we haven’t seen enough of it?

At what point does additional cleaning add value — and at what point does it start destroying value?

And ultimately…

This week I’ve been up on the Atherton Tablelands — one of Australia’s major tropical pasture seed growing and processing regions — talking all things seed quality, establishment and pasture systems.

During the visit, I spent some time at a seed cleaning operation. The operator made a comment that immediately got my attention:

“We’ve had several lines come through at 100% purity.”

Now here’s a question for you…

🌱 If you picked up a tropical pasture seed certificate and saw 100% purity, how would you react?

Would you think:

“That’s exceptional seed!”

Or would 100% actually make you stop and ask a few more questions?

Remember, unlike many broadacre crops, we don’t have clearly defined minimum purity standards across tropical pasture seed that automatically tell us what represents ‘good’.

And purity is only one number on that certificate.

What was actually tested?
How representative was the sample?
What makes up the other components — if there are any?
What does the germination tell us?
And ultimately, how much viable seed are we actually putting into the paddock?

So I’m curious…

🌱 **PASTURE SEEDING RATES SHOULDN’T BE GUESSWORK**

Over the past couple of weeks, I have discussed many of the factors that influence pasture establishment—seed quality, seedbed preparation, soil moisture, rainfall, soil type and the accuracy of the seeding rate itself.

🌱 WAS IT REALLY “PERFECT RAIN”?

Over the past little while, I’ve been looking closely at the results of a number of pasture seeding programs.

And they’ve got me asking more questions than they’ve answered.

In some cases, we know many of the controllables:

Same seed.
Same seeding rate.
Same paddock.

But then within that paddock we can have different cultivation depths, changing soil types, differences in soil nutrition and potentially very different soil biology.

And the result?

Significant variation in establishment.

Then comes the response I hear all the time:

“But we had perfect rain — 150mm over two weeks.”

But how do we actually know it was perfect rain?

Was it 150mm of gentle, effective rainfall that infiltrated the soil profile?

Or did some of it fall faster than that soil could absorb it?

What was happening with soil temperature during those two weeks?

How much sunlight did we have?

How long did the seedbed remain saturated — or alternatively, how quickly did the surface dry out between rainfall events?

Because 150mm is just a number.

It doesn’t necessarily tell us what the germinating seed experienced.

And then we can go another layer deeper.

What would you say if I told you that the presence — or absence — of certain elements in the soil can actually influence seed germination and early establishment?

Suddenly, “we got perfect rain” becomes a much more interesting conversation.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy what I do.

The more we look at pasture establishment, the more we realise there are interactions occurring between the seed, soil, water, temperature, nutrition, biology and management.

Some we can control.

Some we can influence.

And some we simply have to understand better.

That’s where curiosity becomes valuable.

Rather than just asking:

“Did it work?”

Maybe we should be asking:

“Why did it work there… and not 50 metres away?”

Because that question might teach us far more about establishing better pastures than simply calling the season good or bad.
