Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

What a weekend! It was my delight to ordain our very own Luke Siegmeier to the Office of Deacon on Saturday at Biloela. After an exhaustive (exhausting?) process of discernment involving a cast of thousands, Luke is now part of our Clergy team. He will continue his ministry in the Callide and Dawson Valley Parishes. We spoke about the servant nature of ministry, culminating in the inspirational statement from Jesus, "even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Right there we have the content and motivation for Gospel Ministry. A great time and thank you to all who made the trek to attend, pray and participate.

Whilst on the subject of inspiration, as a Rugby League tragic I was profoundly moved by the recent events at a sold out Allianz Stadium for the Souths/Roosters fixture. To see Jai collapse into the arms of Wayne Bennett, the venerable Souths coach in a flood of tears - well some things just transcend sport and parochialism. Bravo. Please pray for all facing Motor Neuron Disease and all chronic disease.

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

There was some heavy traffic on the way back from Theodore on Sunday. When you're waved off the road, you get off the road. For the record, I was off the road and the ignition was off when I took the photo.

Shortly before, the dear folk of Theodore and I looked at Matt 16:21-28. The Apostle Peter who gets Jesus's ID so right (the Christ) gets leadership character so wrong. He does not understand that central to being the Christ is sacrifice, which is also characteristic of Christ's followers. "Take up your cross" over time has been time has been reduced to a figurative cliché (see v24) not a radical imperative.

On the Saturday, we held the Diocesan Women's Conference at the Cathedral. Those who gathered were encouraged by Revd Zoë Browne (Gladstone) to reflect on Restoration through the prism of Jesus's conversations with unlikely people.

This coming Saturday we have the great privilege of ordaining Luke Siegmeier to the office of Deacon at Biloela. This has been the culmination of a long discernment process and we congratulate Luke in advance. Please pray for Luke, Kim and the Parish as we embark on this exciting ministry.

Dear Faithful FB Followers,
A very quick summary of the last little while.
We celebrated Mary Sumner Day, MU's 150th anniversary, with five brave male souls as we discussed Men in MU.
Immediately afterwards, General Synod beckoned; thank you to my colleagues Ven Rob Stanley (Archdeacon) and Andrew Rankin (Chancellor).
After General Synod, we celebrated the Patronal Festival at Miriam Vale (2hrs south of Rocky) with Revd Brett Bovey and the parish.
After a brief bout of (suspected) Man Flu, I headed west to conduct Lay Development on Anglican Ministry at Barcaldine, then church at Longreach, Barcaldine and Alpha. On the Sunday, I got tangled up in the Variety Club Bash at Barcaldine.
This week we are preparing for "Restored", our Diocesan Women's Conference, on Saturday 29th August, and then the Deaconing of Luke Siegmeier at Biloela at 10am on Saturday 5th September. Please pray for these exciting upcoming celebrations.

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

I bring you greetings from our Diocesan Office where a huge crane was just finished doing its job to complete our (almost) new neighbour, Access Recreation.

Also just finished is the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, with the final medal tally. Stark, isn’t it? I note that there is commentary questioning the future of the Games. Seriously? So many great moments – my personal favourite being the Men’s 4 x 100m Sprint Gold- Commentary by Bruce McAvaney & Tamsyn Manou to match the raw emotion for the 2004 Athens Kookaburra’s hockey gold and the 1980 men’s 4 x 100 m medley relay triumph in Moscow. For what it's worth if reform is on the table, send a U23 development squad as our team, and/or compete as individual states for the purposes of medal tally calculations. (Next time I will offer my highly contentious NRL reforms!) What do you think?

From sport to Synod. Please pray for our General Synod in its deliberations over Diocesan Viability/Structures, Episcopal Standards, revisions to Faithfulness in Service and other issues to do with the Church. In a similar vein, I was struck by the Gospel reading for Sunday just past, Matthew 14:13-21. I shared my thoughts at Wandal on Jesus’ response to being “under resourced”. Jesus turned a single-serve peasants’ staple lunch into a satisfying feast for thousands. I wonder if we, like the disciples, look to our apparently meagre resources and forget that we have Jesus? Worth a thought or reflections or two, particularly for those of us in a Rural ministry setting.

At the Cathedral, we are embarking on Vaughan Roberts’ God’s Big Picture. It contains perhaps the best three page summary of the entire Bible, I’ve ever seen (pp 24-26), and two of the best Bible timeline diagrams as a bonus (pp167-168). This course will be a great blessing, no doubt.

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

I think we can safely describe the last little while as “busy”. It all started last Saturday week (18th) as I preached at the beautiful historic “Christ the King” Church, at the vibrant coastal community of Emu Park. Archdeacon Rob Stanley and I are looking suitably satisfied. Good Times!

Fast forward to last Friday (24th) when I attended Rockhampton Museum of Art with my two daughters Mim and Freya. It was the exhibition opening of “Too Deadly: Ten Years of Tarnanthi” a festival of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. Seriously worth a look if you’re in the area.

On Saturday (25th) down to Gladstone for Lay Leader Development, Anglican Ministry. I checked up on the renovations to the Rectory – coming along nicely. Back to Wandal for Church – a quick selfie before the service. On Sunday we confirmed Kodi Barrett at North Rockhampton. His Mum Peta-leigh was proudly in attendance. Then to Gracemere for church later that morning.

Today we conducted the Annual Law Service at St Paul’s. The preaching passage was Psalm 19 which reminds us that God’s glory is proclaimed in the Physical, Moral and Relational realms of creation. In attendance were most of the Rockhampton Legal Fraternity as well as Her Honour, Justice Debra Mullins, President Qld Court of Appeal, Donna Kirkland MP, Sate Member for Rockhampton, Bishop Daniel Meagher, Rockhampton Catholic Diocese. I also caught up with the Deputy Mayor, Councilor Drew Wickerson. This was such a valuable time of connection with the community. I was called upon as Dean Daniel is attending Deans’ Conference. Thank you to the Cathedral team for hosting so generously.

Please pray for General Synod as it meets next month to deliberate on matters of significance for the national Anglican Church.

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

I thought I’d do a bit of “what I did on my holidays” for your edification. Just beforehand, I celebrated with Revd’s Zoë and David Browne the 40th anniversary of St Peter’s Clinton (Gladstone Parish). A full church, a lavish Parish lunch and the Great Commission (Matt 28:16-20) made for an inspirational event.

A few days later, off to Perth: Elizabeth Quay at dawn, My Ordaining Bishop, Peter Brain with Christine, Virginia and myself; and squeezing into Optus Stadium to see the ‘Battle of the Birds’ – West Coast v Adelaide AFL. The Crows prevailed, fairly comfortably over the Eagles. Back to Geraldton, our old stomping ground. In addition to catching up with friends and former colleagues, re-visited the HMAS Syndey II memorial, the Horizon Ball and a verdant Chapman Valley.

All too soon, I am now back in the office, thankful for the break but also thankful for the task God has called me to and the team he has called to be fellow workers. Please pray for this team as we seek to reach CQ with the momentos news of Jesus.

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

What a week it’s been. I was in Sydney for the Fellow Workers’ Bishops’ Conference. It was a great time of fellowship and pastoral support. Bible Studies on Ephs 4:1-10 were led by my former supervisor, Dr Lionel Windsor. I also caught up with old friends and colleagues, +Darrell (NWA) and +Rod (Armidale). Visiting old haunts brought back fond memories, Newtown Streetscape, Campos (the ‘original’) and Sydney Uni Graffiti tunnel.

From there, family catch up in Figtree and lunch at Saltie Dog, Coledale. This café is run by Leigh Steward OAM, an old school friend and is the highest rated café in Australia, with an unbelievable 2,209 5* Google ratings – (I checked).

Yesterday, back home for the St Peter’s Clinton 40th anniversary celebrations – Zoë and David Browne are doing an amazing job. It was the last of our Diocesan Discipleship Series – Matt 28:16-20 the Great Commission – “Therefore, Go!” If that strikes a chord with you, please let me know. Keep praying!

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

Greetings from the tropics, on the shortest day of the year!

We are at 27 degrees currently and I have just come from St James' Keppel. This surely is one of the best situated places of worship on the planet. (!) It was my pleasure to preach and preside at their Sunday morning services, 7:30 and 9:30. We looked at Matthew 10:24-39, where Jesus sends his disciples out on their first recorded mission. His calls for allegiance and devotion are uncompromising and worthy of close attention. Thanks to Rob and the team for their kind welcome and warm hospitality.

We also noted Mother's Union's sesquicentenary, with appropriate celebrations.

On Saturday I had the great privilege of spending the day in retreat with our Lay Ministers team. They all put in outstanding efforts as we worked through various preaching passages. So good to be part of it.

I am off to Sydney to attend the Fellow Workers Bishops' Gathering. I'm looking forward to catching up with valued colleagues in that space.

Dear Faithful Facebook followers,

As part of my role, I like to keep up with contemporary culture. Recently, this has involved visiting our local gallery, the Rockhampton Museum of Art. I'm learning..

When I was in Canberra earlier this year, I went to the National Gallery. I recognised a large canvas as Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles. So moved was I that I took (possibly legally?) a photo. Out of curiosity, I wondered how much it was worth. Bought by the Whitlam Government for $1.3m in 1973, fifty years later according to the Syndney Morning Herald it's worth is estimated at $500 m (SMH 22/6/2023). (!)(!!) Perhaps you have a view on this. I think I do.

Speaking of value, an enthusiastic crowd welcomed Mike Uptin and Sarah McKinnon from the Bush Church Aid QNNSW Office to North Rocky for BCA Connect 2026. Our very own Piper family from Emerald gave us an encouraging overview of their ministry over the last year and a bit. (Joanne and David are elsewhere, David, Luke and Matthew consented to be pictured). The Bible Talk was courtesy of Simon Reeve (ex BCA now Woolgoolga). Simon encouraged us to be committed to the "ordinary" mission as depicted in Acts 2:1-13. this was a timely reminder of our focus in ministry.

We welcome Davo and Neridah as locums in Biloela, Antony Weiss at Longreach and west. Please keep praying for permanent appointment to these and other CQ Parishes.

Dear Faithful Facebook Followers,

Yesterday, I had the great joy of sharing fellowship and worship with the saints at North Rockhampton. Revd Sam Gough preached on Acts 1:1-11. The "thing is" we are called to share in the Divine mission of witnessing to Jesus. Totally. I was struck by the use of "began" (ESV) in verse 1. "Began"! It seems that Jesus' ministry in our earthly reality was just getting things started. Food for future thought I'm sure.

I caught up with Revd Sam and Ministry Apprentice Shannon Smith. It was great to chat with such dear folk, including Mandy and Revd Narelle, with whom I am sharing a halo.

This weekend we will be back at North for BCA Connect. I look forward to hearing from Mike Uptin (Qld/Nth NSW Regional Officer), Simon Reeve (former BCA Field Staff) and particularly our very own David and Joanne Piper (Emerald). This is always a day of much encouragement.
