✨Today, the Moon and Sun arrange across the sky to form a New Moon in Cancer, nestled just days after the Winter Solstice* the darkest point of the southern year. My morning walk was filled with fresh dewy glorious light….the Sun has paused at its lowest arc, the shadows are as long as they’ll be before the sun slowly begins its return.

In this beautiful liminal moment of the year— when the light is reborn and the Moon is void — I offer you a simple ritual to embrace this energy. Cancer is the Moon’s natural sign, a water sign of protection, intuition, and deep interiority (It’s also my Sun AND Moon sign, hence my love of this time of year! The sign governs our inner shell — the sacred architecture of safety around the self and a major theme in my art.

A simple ritual.
✨Grab your Journal, a shell and a candle and find a cosy spot, where you feel comforted and womb-like, wrapped in soft warmth. You can make this more elaborate with incense and ornamental bowls and so on, but what is so much more important is your intention. For that you need nothing, but yourself.

✨Light the candle, hold the shell and meditate by slowing down your breath and opening the single eye of light in the dark of your mind. Allow yourself the time to relax and see yourself clearly. Shine light on the shadows that you’ve covered over with darkness and compassionately examine the parts of yourself that are hidden, repressed, or denied.

✨Your journal prompts:
What does “home” feel like in my body right now?
Where do I need greater protection, softness, or boundaries?
What is a new emotional truth I’m ready to honour?
What seed do I wish to plant in the soil of this midwinter?

✨After writing, hold the shell in your hand, feel its soft strength, its outer walls of living protection that travel and grow in perfect harmony with the animal within (you). Hold your shell (if using) and whisper a phrase that anchors in your intentions.

Your shell will now be there to remind you of this shadow illumination and intention setting during the darkest time of year.

Blow out the candle XX And step into the Sun XX Pass on some light XX✨✨✨✨✨

My friend bought an artwork from me and was so happy to send me this picture of it installed in her home.
Living with Art really does bring joy. 🙏🏼 Especially when it has a night glow ➡️

****😫The government has bought to and end the ability for small businesses to claim artwork purchase as a 100% tax write off, so you have until 30th June to buy an artwork and claim it all on tax.🤓🤓

I just have a few prints left available from The Deep Green Sea; DM me or make a time to come and see the works in my studio in Fremantle.

Thankyou 🙏🏼🙏🏼 🥰

Ahhh Winter Solstice….my favourite time of year…
Please enjoy here a short excerpt from ‘The Deep Green Sea’ where a perpetual Winter Solstice exists….

Arrival of Reverie
Orla. ENTRY №:02

“…..I had come for this fresh air, yet already sought shelter from the cold wind in the humidity of the enclosed passenger lounge, which was more of a tower, a squat lighthouse made of stone sheets of alabaster, limestone and wood.
A frontier outpost, where the heralds and messengers turned around and went back again.
It stood in the wind facing the sun and the racing clouds in still seclusion. Weeping Peppermint trees grew sideways, the driftwood banked at high tide and the jetty was crumbling. A semi-desertion.
The passenger lounge at ground level was a dim cocoon of stillness after the windswept journey. Indistinguishable smiling staff hovered against warm mellow wood-lined walls. Motley benches and seats of past eras and futures, were scattered about. Wide windows faced the ocean, framing a sweeping bay of fluxing boundaries. It made my breath skip.
Low slanting yellow light inched along the back wall of the lounge. The sun was setting West, behind the rolling sea. A sheet of sun-shower slashed on the glass suddenly from a rogue black cloud-squall that swept past the blinding sun, then disintegrated.
I sank down heavily and watched the dust motes swirl in light-shafts upon the stone ground. The mid-winter shadows were at their most spectacular distorted zenith. Plants and old chairs lengthened their limbs in reaching hands of shade.
The cold and shivering in my body eased. The rapid thaw slackened my jaw, and my eyes softened. I could not resist the pink, humid lax light behind closed eyelids and the sound of the sea. For this moment, body and mind seemed in the same place, the spirit settling back in.
I vaguely calculated when the sun would turn back.
Winter Solstice.
Would I turn back too?….”
