The Freeman Organ Service CELEBRATING 160 YEARS
A service held on the 22nd of September 2019 on to celebrate the birthday of the Freeman Organ.
It was installed in Methodist churches in Ballarat and then Clunes, 36 km north of Ballarat, until the turn of the twentieth century. Joseph donated the organ to Fremantle Wesley in 1902 with the proviso that the costs of transport and installation be met by us. He installed the organ himself, having retired by then. The financial statement of the “Trustees of the Methodist Church, Fremantle” for the year ended 30th September 1902 shows that the cost of transport and installation was £352/0/9 of which the extension to the rear wall of the church, the “organ loft”, cost £216/16/6. ($704.07 & $433.65).
The organ was rebuilt in 1915. In 1931 it was rebuilt again, by the renowned Josiah E. Dodd Organ Works of Adelaide. The jarrah case was made by the Fremantle Locke Furniture Company whose principals were prominent members of this church over several generations. At the same time the organ console was moved away from the organ to its present position, and the pulpit, originally in a central position, was moved to its present location.
Josiah Dodd, now J.E. Dodd & Sons Gunstar, extended parts of the organ, and also electrified the action, in 1966.
