God is looking for leaders who are not only talented, educated, or influential, but leaders who are anointed, Spirit-filled, wise, knowledgeable, and understanding.
Joshua is a powerful example. After Moses' leadership, Joshua was prepared to lead Israel into the Promised Land. His effectiveness was connected to what was inside him: the Spirit of God and the wisdom of God.
A dynamic leader is not simply someone who has a position; a dynamic leader carries God's presence and represents God's purposes.

Deuteronomy 34:9 - Joshua was described as being โfull of the spirit of wisdom.โ
The Holy Spirit is essential for effective spiritual leadership. Human ability alone is not enough to accomplish a divine assignment.
A. The Holy Spirit gives power
Acts 1:8 โ โBut ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon youโฆโ
God gives leaders supernatural strength to accomplish what He has called them to do.
B. The Holy Spirit gives direction
Romans 8:14 teaches that those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.
A godly leader should not be controlled by emotions, pressure, or popular opinion. The leader must be led by the Spirit.
C. The Holy Spirit gives discernment
A leader needs to recognize:
What is from God
What is not from God
Who can be trusted
When to move
When to wait
What decision to make
D. The Holy Spirit produces godly character
The evidence of the Spirit is not only power but also character.
Galatians 5:22โ23 speaks of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.
A leader who has power without character can become dangerous.
Before God gives someone influence over people, He wants that person to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Joshua was โfull of the spirit of wisdom.โ
Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge correctly and make decisions that are consistent with God's will.
A. Wisdom comes from God
Proverbs 2:6
โFor the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.โ
A leader should not depend entirely on human intelligence.
James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God.
B. Wisdom helps leaders make right decisions
Leadership involves decisions every day.
A leader must know:
When to speak
When to listen
When to correct
When to encourage
When to act
When to wait
A wise leader does not make every decision based on emotion.
C. Wisdom helps leaders handle people
People are different. A wise leader knows that everyone cannot be treated exactly the same way.
Jesus demonstrated wisdom in dealing with different people and different situations.
D. Wisdom produces humility
A truly wise leader understands that he or she does not know everything.
Proverbs 11:14 emphasizes the importance of counsel.
A godly leader is willing to listen, learn, and receive correction.
Knowledge tells you what is right; wisdom helps you know how and when to apply it.

A godly leader must know the Word of God.
Leadership without biblical knowledge can easily become leadership based on personal opinions, culture, emotions, or human philosophy.
A. God's Word provides direction
Psalm 119:105
โThy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.โ
A leader needs God's Word to know where to go and how to lead others.
B. Biblical knowledge protects leaders from error
Hosea 4:6
โMy people are destroyed for lack of knowledgeโฆโ
A leader who does not know Scripture can easily be deceived or lead others into error.
C. Biblical knowledge produces spiritual maturity
2 Timothy 3:16โ17 teaches that Scripture is profitable for doctrine, correction, instruction, and righteousness.
The Word of God:
Teaches us
Corrects us
Trains us
Equips us
Builds our faith
Shapes our character
D. Leaders must study the Word
2 Timothy 2:15 challenges believers to rightly divide the Word of truth.
A leader should not only quote Scripture; a leader should understand Scripture and live by it.
You cannot effectively lead God's people if you do not know God's Word.
