BE AN EXAMPLE

1 Timothy 1[16] But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.

The gospel is God’s power for salvation, it reconciles people to God and brings about transformation from ungodliness to godliness to those who believe in Christ. There is no message like the gospel, simple yet a dynamite. It has the power to change lives. Paul through the gospel had his life turned around from being a persecutor of the church into a preacher, and a murderer into a missionary.

God's saving grace always produces results, if He saves, He will surely sanctify and continue to do so until Christ returns. You are not saved to only sit in the pew, you are saved to be an active partaker in the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. When Paul was saved, his life was totally transformed, he began preaching the same Jesus he used to persecute others for. Not only that but he went on to establish churches in many Gentile territories by the grace of God - 1 Corinthians 15[10].

Apart from becoming a minister, Paul also became an example for everyone including the self-righteous Jews so they may know that God's grace is effective. Paul was also an example in revealing that, God can use anyone for His purpose. Choosing and entrusting the gospel with Paul is evidence of a solid example that God equips and enables anyone who answers His call to serve. You are saved to serve and be an example to others - 1 Peter 2[12]. Be the kind of example that makes people believe Jesus is real.

THE GOSPEL IS SIMPLE

1 Corinthians 2[3] I came to you in weakness” timid and trembling. [4] And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. [5] I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.

Paul wrote reminding the Corinthians how he presented himself and the gospel to them. He went to them in weakness, timid and trembling. Such a posture is far better than trying to be strong, self confident and prideful in his presentation of the gospel. He might end up being a distruction, distorting and a hindrance to the acceptance and spread of the gospel. Sometimes what makes people indifferent to the gospel is how some preachers try to complicate the message of the cross by trying to be clever and eloquent.

Paul desisted from employing human wisdom, and persuasive speech in presenting Christ. He kept his message plain, simple, and he was solely dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit. Learning from Paul, we must not try to be strong, confident in ourselves, prideful, wise and persuasive. The gospel is not a complicated message, it is simple, despite being offensive but ultimately it is God's power for salvation - Roman 1:16.

The gospel must be presented in it's simplest form, thus, God in His mercy and love sent Jesus Christ, His Son to live a sinless life, die on the cross for the world's sins. He was buried and rose from the dead on the third day conquering Satan, sin and death. Through faith in Jesus Christ, the world can receive forgiveness of sins, reconciliation and eternal life, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. The Gospel is simple, Jesus lived, died, rose and saves.
A preacher's faithfulness must never be measured by his eloquence or persuasiveness but by faithfully proclaiming the gospel in its entirety and simplicity.

CAST IT ALL ON HIM

1 Peter 5[7] Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

"If God cares for you, why then has He allowed this bad situation to happen to you?", This is one of the many ways the devil uses to make people doubt God in difficult times. The assumption is, if God cares for you, you must not go through hard times. The main reason why this tends to work is because many think becoming a Christian implies you no longer face troubles. There is also a philosophy that if we get in trouble, we must have done something wrong and God is punishing us: Psalms 34[19] Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Jesus Himself didn't promise His disciples a trouble free life - John 16[33]. He gave them a guarantee of troubles as well as triumph because of His victory of the world. This therefore implies that, in times of trouble or in our anxieties, we ought not to lose faith but trust in Jesus and cast your anxieties on Him. What this means is, going through troubles in life and being anxious doesn't mean God doesn't care for you. We will go through things we might never get to understand but that doesn't mean God is not with us. God can use troubles for His glory or to build our faith.

God's peace doesn't remove the storm. It guides your heart in the storm. In anxiety, we ought to seek God's face that He may cover our hearts and minds with His peace: Philippians 4:[6] Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. So, the right response for a believer when anxiety strikes is not to shy away from God but cast all of your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.

YOU CANNOT WORK FOR IT

Galatians 6[15] It doesn't matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation.

In his final remarks, Paul reiterated the fundamental truth he had been emphasising in this letter to the Galatians, justification, is by faith alone, and in Christ Jesus alone and not in works or following the law. The law was primarily given to expose our sinfulness and inability to keep it hence our desperate need for grace - Romans 5[20]. There were false teachers advocating for the Gentiles to be circumcised in order to be saved, they believed justification requires both faith and works.

Believing justification requires both faith and works is heresy and a direct attack on the sufficiency of the atoning work of Christ to save. Believing that you can contribute anything to your salvation ceases to make it a gift. If you add 0.01% works to grace, you have lost 100% of grace. If you could work for it, you deserve it, but none of us are deserving, what we deserve is the wrath of God and eternal separation from Him. But God in His mercy sent forth Christ to die for our sins on the cross, whosoever believes in Hin will not perish.

No one can work for salvation, it is all grace, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone - Ephesians 2[8-9]. However, works do have its place though they are not a requirement of salvation but the evidence of salvation. You are saved by God's grace through faith in Christ and the evidence of your salvation is the production of good works - James 2[14]. Stop striving, you cannot work for your salvation, all you have to do is to believe in Christ, and His finished work on calvary.

GOD CAN FORGIVE YOU

Psalms 32[1] Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! [2]Yes, what joy for those whose record the lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!

God is in the business of forgiving sins, it is only made possible by His grace through faith in Christ. It is also important to understand that, there is no sin too big for Him, Jesus' blood is sufficient enough to cover all your sins. It doesn't matter what you have done or how bad your past is, God still can forgive your sins, all of them. God openly invites you come settle matters with Him to be reconciled back to Him: Isaiah 1[18] “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.

Forgiveness of sin is something God alone can do and this ought to bring you great joy because He is faithful to forgive you when you confess - 1 John 1[9]. If salvation was to be up to other people, many of us would have no hope of being saved or if it were to pay for it, we would be doomed because we could not afford it. But glory to God for His steadfast love and endless grace for providing a sacrifice once-and-for-all sacrifice to atone for our sins. Salvation is a free gift that can be received by faith in Christ Jesus. David expressed joy for having his sins forgiven because only God can forgive sins.

All sins we commit, are ultimately against God and we do need His forgiveness, it matters the most. Living without God's forgiveness is living under God's wrath everyday - John 3[36]. David committed grievous sins and after being confronted by Nathan, he confessed, repented and was forgiven - 2 Samuel 12[9-13]. God is in the business of forgiving sins, if you confess your sins, repent, and believe in Jesus Christ you will be forgiven, reconciled to God and become His child. No sin is too big, no past is too dark, the blood of Jesus is sufficient to cover all your sins.

THERE IS NO FAVORITISM

Acts of the Apostles 10[34] Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. [35] In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.

It was against the Law for a Jew to enter into a Gentiles' home and later on eat with them. Entering and eating in another person's home meant fellowship, acceptance and in other instances it was covenantal. And Jews regarded the Gentles as unclean and did not permit anyone to eat with nor enter a Gentile's home because they would be defiled - Acts 10[28]. But God instructed Peter to go and preach the Gospel to Cornelius and his household as He was extending His grace beyond the Jews. This meant that God was accepting Gentiles as His own people as He had planned from the beginning.

Despite being an apostle, Peter learnt that God's grace was for everyone including the Gentiles. He was even surprised how they also received the Holy Spirit - Acts 10[47]. God accepts anyone from anywhere despite their past if they accept His free gift of salvation and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is not by Law, salvation is by grace through faith in Christ. All of Jesus' encounters with the Pharisees served to prove that the Law could not make them right with God.

One of the most interesting encounters was Jesus' conversation with Nicodimus, He bluntly told him to be born again or else he would never see the Kingdom of God - John 3[3]. Nicodumus didn't really understand what it meant but he was not willing to leave everything behind and follow Jesus Christ. You cannot be born again and hold on to your former way of life. Once you are born again, the old sinful life will be gone and the new will begin - 2 Corinthians 5[17]. However, God will not accept you based on merit, good works or following the Law, He will accept you based on your faith in Christ and His finished work on the cross.

JOY IS IN CHRIST

Philippians 2[17] But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy.

Paul's letter to the Philippians is regarded as a letter of joy, despite being written from prison. This proves a point that, joy is not found in circumstances, joy is found in Christ. Paul's joy wasn't because of his strength of character, but a gift given to Him by the Spirit of God despite his imprisonment. This explains why JOY is part of the Fruit of the Spirit - Galatians 5[22-23], it comes from God. You cannot find everlasting joy from things or people, true joy comes from God. Happiness is found in things or people which makes it temporal and it can be easily be shaken once circumstances change.

Joy as a gift that comes from God cannot be disrupted by events, or circumstance. Thus, Paul saying, I will rejoice even if I lose my life. Many people will be devastated just at the thought of dying yet Paul had the audacity to rejoice in the face of it. When you understand that your hope in Christ is not only for this world, nothing thqt happens to you can take away your peace and joy. Paul was dead to self and alive in Christ, meaning he ceased living for himself and living for Christ. He was not afraid to die for Christ's sake because no one who loses his life for the sake of Christ will it - Matthew 10[37-39].

If you are a Christian and always afraid of losing your life, you haven't truly understood what it means to be in Christ. Paul was a true disciple, he did not hold on to his own life, but gave it up for Christ. The problem is many "Christians" today want the best life now and do not think of eternity in God's glorious presence. When you don't have anything except yourself to live for, you will never experience true joy because true joy comes from serving God and others. Learn to serve and receive God's joy!
