What kind of King are you welcoming?
Wow… what a moment.
Palm Sunday feels so beautiful on the outside…
crowds shouting, palm branches waving, people celebrating Jesus like a King.
But if you look a little deeper… it’s actually heartbreaking.
“Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” (John 12:13)
They were crying out, “Save us now!”
But they didn’t understand how He came to save.
They wanted a King who would overthrow Rome…
Jesus came to overthrow sin.
They wanted power.
He came in humility.
They wanted control.
He came to surrender His life.
Because it’s easy to shout: “Jesus, save me!”
But:
Do we still want Him when He comes humbly?
When He doesn’t fix things the way we expected?
When He deals with our hearts instead of our circumstances?
The same voices that shouted “Hosanna”
would, days later, shout “Crucify Him.”
Because when Jesus didn’t meet their expectations…
they rejected Him.
And I can’t help but ask myself…
How often do we do the same?
We praise Him when it looks like He’s moving the way we want…
but when He comes quietly, dealing with our hearts instead of our situation…
we pull back.
We lay down our praise…
but hold tightly to our expectations.
It’s easy to welcome Jesus as King
when He looks like the King we imagined.
But will I still choose Him when He doesn’t?
Will I still trust Him when He doesn’t fix it the way I thought He would?
Will I still follow when the road leads to a cross… before it leads to victory?
Jesus didn’t come the way they expected…
but He came exactly the way we needed.
Not just to save us from what’s around us…
but to save us from what’s within us.
So today I’m not just saying “Hosanna”…
I’m saying,
“Jesus, be King in the way You choose… not the way I expect.”
